No. 8 Louisville Takes Series Against Boston College
March 10, 2019 | Baseball
Louisville wins game two 11-4 to clinch the opening series of ACC play.
Louisville (11-4, 2-1 ACC) completed an 11-4 victory in the resumption of game two of the series before falling 6-4 in the series finale. The Cardinals are now 32-9 in their 41 conference series since joining the ACC.
Sunday began with the Cardinals holding a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning following the suspension of play on Saturday. Boston College (8-6, 1-2) tallied four runs over the final three innings, but UofL had plenty of cushion for the series-clinching victory.
Nick Bennett (3-0) stayed perfect on the season after tossing five scoreless innings in Saturday's start. Adam Elliott retired five of the six batters he faced on Sunday as part of the Louisville relief effort.
In the final game of the weekend, it was BC that jumped out in front. The Eagles took the lead on a solo homer two batters into the contest and led the rest of the way. Boston College tacked on another run in the first before stretching the lead to three with a run in the second.
Louisville broke through in the second with Danny Oriente picking up a one-out single and moving to third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Drew Campbell then took advantage of the run-scoring chance with a sacrifice fly.
BC added two more runs in the fifth and one more insurance run in the ninth and appeared to be cruising to an easy victory. However, the Cardinals had a final offensive push in them in the final half inning.
Tyler Fitzgerald singled to the opposite field with one away before Logan Wyatt dropped a bunt down for a base hit. Oriente made it a four-run game on a run-scoring groundout, but it brought the Cardinals to their final out.
Campbell extended the game with a RBI single on the infield and Henry Davis doubled just inside the foul line in right to make it 6-4 and bring the tying run to the plate. Alex Binelas rolled a grounder to second though, leaving the Cardinal comeback just short.
Bryan Hoeing (2-2) took the loss for Louisville, allowing three runs in four innings of work. Michael Kirian threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Bobby Miller surrendered just a solo home run in his three innings.
Louisville will close out its 14-game homestand with a pair of midweek games against Ole Miss on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
