No. 4 Louisville Baseball Shut Out by Georgia Tech
March 23, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals lost 4-0 on Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The offense was unable to get on track for the fourth-ranked Louisville baseball team, as the Cardinals dropped a 4-0 decision against Georgia Tech on Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (17-6, 5-3 ACC) managed just five hits on the day and was blanked for the first time since May 23, 2015, a stretch of 221 consecutive games with a run scored.
The loss clinches the series for Georgia Tech, marking just the fifth ACC series the Cardinals have lost at home out of 22 played since joining the league in 2015.
Nick Bennett (4-1) was hit with his first loss of the year, allowing three runs over six innings of work. The southpaw struck out three and gave up four hits. Adam Elliott surrendered one run in his inning of relief, while Shay Smiddy and Garrett Schmeltz had scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
For the first time in eight games, the Cardinals were unable to push a run across in the first inning. UofL went down in order in the opening inning and found itself behind on a long two-run homer in the second.
Justin Lavey singled with one away in the third for Louisville's first hit of the afternoon, and Jake Snider added another with two down in the frame. However, a groundout stranded the pair on the bases.
Louisville put another running in scoring position in the fourth with Danny Oriente's one-out double, but again the Cardinals were unable to convert.
From there, Georgia Tech (16-7, 5-3 ACC) retired 13 straight Cardinals while adding single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
UofL's final threat came in the eighth, started by Ethan Stringers single through the left side. Snider followed with a walk, as did Tyler Fitzgerald. The runners were stranded though, as Logan Wyatt popped up to shortstop to end the inning.
Louisville and Georgia Tech will wrap up the series on Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium. With rain in the forecast later in the afternoon, Sunday's first pitch has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. ET.
