LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams are back in action on Friday, Nov. 1 as they take on ACC rival Notre Dame. The top-25 dual meet will begin at 5 p.m. at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Â
About the Cardinals
The Cardinals are coming off another top-25 matchup as the women fell to the No. 3 Lady Vols 172.5-127.5 while the men dropped a 150.5-149.5 decision against the 10th-ranked Volunteers. Louisville took the top spot in 15 events against Tennessee as Daniel Pinto and Molly Fears swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter. Evgenii Somov collected a pair of wins in both breaststroke events with times that rank top-10 nationally so far this year. Daniel Sos (200 back, 200 IM) and Nicolas Albiero (100 back, 100 fly) were also among the meet's double-event winners.
Â
Both the men's and women's teams started the season off with a win during the home opener against Xavier. The UofL men won 14 out of 16 events to post a 177-81 victory over the Musketeers while the women took first in every race to win 194-62. The Cardinal women won the SMU Classic for the second-straight year, narrowly defeating No. 13 Auburn by two points. Throughout the two-day competition, Louisville won three events and collected 11 NCAA "B" cuts.
Â
History was made last season for the Cardinals as they became the first ACC program in history to have both its men's and women's teams finish among the top-five in the team standings at the NCAA Championships in the same year. The women's team recorded their highest finish in program history with a fourth-place showing at NCAAs while the men's team finished a program-high fifth place. The Cardinal men were the team runners-up at the ACC Championships and the women secured third place.
Â
Scouting Notre Dame
Led by sophomore Zach Yeadon, the 18th-ranked Notre Dame men are fresh off a convincing victory against Purdue last weekend. Yeadon won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle while diver David Petrison broke the school record in the platform event. The 23rd-ranked Fighting Irish women also defeated the Boilermakers behind triple-event winner Coleen Gillilan (100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley), whose times all rank top-10 nationally.
Â
Both the Notre Dame men's and women's teams fell to Indiana and Kentucky earlier this season, but the Fighting Irish began the season with a clean sweep of conference rival Florida State. Yeadon won the 1000 freestyle against the Seminoles in a time that currently ranks second in the country so far this year, and he also boasts the sixth-fastest time in the nation in the 500 freestyle. Last season, the Fighting Irish men finished sixth at the ACC Championships and the women took fourth overall in the team standings.
Â
Last meeting
The Cardinals faced the Fighting Irish at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge last season, but the last dual meet between the two teams took place in 2017. Louisville won a total of 12 events in South Bend two years ago, but the women fell 181.5-118.5 and the men were narrowly defeated 153.5-146.5. Sophie Cattermole won the 1000 freestyle while Grace Oglesby finished first and third in the 200 butterfly and 100 butterfly, respectively. Mariia Astashkina took the top spot in the 200 breaststroke while also finishing second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 breaststroke.
