LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's golf team is ready for an opportunity this weekend to face a field of teams similar to what it would see at an NCAA Regional Championship.
The Cardinals begin play at the Evans Derby Experience, a three-day, 12-team event, on Sunday. Four of the nation's top-10 programs, including No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Arkansas, are on-hand for the competition that is being held at the Auburn University Club, a par-72, 6,280-yard course in Auburn, Ala.
Tee times on Sunday and Monday are set for 9:30 a.m. ET on the first and 10th holes. Tuesday's play starts with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET.
No. 26 Louisville is utilizing a lineup of Lauren Hartlage, Olivia Cason, Molly Skapik, Kristin Engle, and Delaney Shah. Jacqueline Twitty and Margot Bechadergue are competing as individuals.
The Cardinals have played in seven events this year, most recently finishing seventh in the Moon Golf Invitational in Florida in late February. Hartlage paced the team with a 3-over-par 219 to tie for 10th, while Cason logged a 7-over-par 223 to finish tied for 22nd.
The sophomore, Hartlage is compiling another remarkable season. The reigning ACC Freshman of the Year ranks 38th by Golfweek and 57th by Golfstat. She boasts a 71.89-stroke average, with five top-10 finishes. The Elizabethtown, Ky., native totaled 12 rounds even or below par, including a collegiate-best 7-under-par 65 in the fall.
The senior, Skapik ranks second on the team in average, carrying a 73.16 to go with four top-10 showings. Cason, a junior, is third with a 74.37 average and two top-10 marks.
Head coach Courtney Trimble starred at Auburn from 1999-02, earning all-SEC honors three times and capturing All-America accolades in 2002. She helped guide the program to a national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships in 2002.
The tournament is named in honor of former Auburn women's golf coaches Kim Evans and Virginia Derby Grimes.
A 1981 Auburn graduate, Evans was Auburn's coach for 21 seasons from 1994-2015. She led the Tigers to eight SEC championships, 20 consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and seven top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championship.
Derby Grimes played at Auburn from 1985-86 and was the Tigers' head coach from 1991-94. She has been recognized as one of the world's top amateur women's golfers and was a member of the victorious 1998, 2000, and 2006 U.S. Curtis Cup teams. She will serve as the United States captain for the 2018 U.S. Curtis Cup matches.
