Louisville wins 3-2 in Charlottesville
Emily Scott had 12 kills and six blocks to lead the No. 21-ranked University of Louisville to an 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 15-2 win at Virginia in ACC volleyball action Friday night in Charlottesville.
Â
UofL improves to 9-0 in the ACC and is 16-4 overall. The Cardinals hit .204 with 12 blocks and survived 15 service errors. Junior Melanie McHenry had 14 kills and 17 digs and Amanda Green pitched in 10 kills for the Cards. The Cavaliers hit .112 for the match with eight blocks and the loss drops them to 6-13 and 2-7 in the ACC. UVA was led by Sarah Billiard's 14 kills.
Â
The Cards committed four service errors and hit just .114 in the first set with the Hoos. The teams traded point with 10 ties but only three lead changes in the stanza. Down 16-13, the Cards let the Cavaliers go on a 5-0 run to go up 21-13. The Louisville rally fell short despite forcing UVA to call timeout at 22-17. The Cards would score just once more and an ace by UVA's Grace Turner gave the Cavs set point. UofL's Piper Roe scored on a tip but a service error by Molly Sauer gave the set  25-18 to Virginia.
Â
In the second set, UofL used a 5-0 run to take a 14-10 lead on the Cavs. But the Virginia rallied to tie at 14 setting off a see-saw set that saw 15 ties and eight lead changes.  Busboom Kelly had to call timeout when Virginia tied at 18, but a pair of kills by Megan Sloan put the Cards up 23-22. Emily Scott scored on a slide and an unlikely kill on an overpass by defensive specialist Mia Stander gave the set to UofL 25-22.  The Cardinals' hitting improved to .220 and UofL got a pair of aces from senior libero Molly Sauer.
Â
In the third set, the Cards used a 7-2 run to go up 9-7 and built their largest lead at 23-13 on a block by Piper Roe and Wilma Rivera. Virginia rallied and scored four straight to get to 23-18 and sparked a Cardinal timeout. A kill by Melanie McHenry gave the Cards set point and then the junior from Speedway, Indiana scored again for the 25-19 win.  UofL hit .429 with seven blocks.Â
Â
In the fourth, UofL hit .000 and were outblocked 4-1. UofL had to call its first time out at 11-6 when Virginia cobbled together three straight points. It did little to chill the Cavaliers, who increased their lead to 18-10 on a kill by UVA's Grace Turner. Virginia stayed hot and powered to the 25-18 win.
Â
In the fifth set, the momentum deserted the Cavs and had to call timeout when the Cards popped out to a 4-0 lead and then again trailing 10-2. The Cardinals benefitted from a total of seven Cavalier hitting errors as they cruised to the 15-2 win. Â
Â
The Cards head to Pittsburgh for a 1 p.m. Sunday showdown with the Panthers, the other 9-0 team in the league. Â
