Acosta and Albiero Post Victories Against Ohio State, Texas A&M

The Cardinals opened the first day of action with strong performances against ranked teams.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Marcelo Acosta and Nicolas Albiero each posted individual event wins to lead the No. 11/8 University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams through the first day of competition against No. 16/17 Ohio State and No. 5/10 Texas A&M at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio on Friday evening. The Cardinal men trail Ohio State 97-70 and Texas A&M 100-66.
The Cardinals opened up the meet with a pair of third place finishes in the 200 free relay. Katie Schorr (23.91), Avery Braunecker (23.00), Lainey Visscher (23.71) and Annette Schultz (23.25) combined for a time of 1:33.87, while the men's team of Matyi Kovacs (21.09), Andrej Barna (19.56), Mihalis Deliyiannis (20.18) and Zach Harting (20.21) posted a 1:21.04.
In the 200 IM freshman Kaylee Wheeler, posted the top time for the Cardinals with a 2:06.96. In the men's event, Nicolas Albiero took fourth in a tightly contested race, touching the wall in a time of 1:50.35.
Acosta earned the Cards their first win of the night, leading from wire-to-wire and finishing with a time of 4:26.39 in the 500 free. In the women's event, Maggie Jahns was Louisville's top performer, touching in a time of 5:05.46.
Morgan Friesen and Evgenii Somov turned in a pair of fourth place finishes in the 100 breast with times of 1:03.82 and 55.20 respectively. Wheeler (1:05.07) and Lauren James (1:05.44) also posted solid performances in the event.
In the 200 back, Schultz was Louisville's top performer, placing fourth with a time of 2:02.17. Nikkos Sofianidis led the Cards with a second place finish (1:48.57) in the men's event, followed closely by Daniel Sos in third (1:48.63).
The Louisville freshmen continued to put up strong performances as Schorr sprinted to a fourth place finish in the 100 free, stopping the clock at 51.19. On the men's side, Barna took third, racing to a time of 44.53.
Albiero notched Louisville's second win in the 200 fly, narrowly edging Ohio State's Noah Lense in a time of 1:47.21. Harting followed just behind in third with a 1:48.85. In the women's event, Alena Kraus took fourth with a 2:02.43.
In the diving events, Libby Lambert was Louisville's top scorer, tallying a 234.35 on the 3-meter. For the men, Daniel Fecteau and Daniel Pinto finished sixth (358.95) and seventh (355.20).
In the final event of the evening, the 400 medley relay team of Ashlyn Schoof (56.94), Friesen (1:03.28), Kraus (55.39) and Schorr (50.61) took fourth with a 3:46.22. The men's squad of Albiero (48.58), Somov (54.71), Harting (47.33) and Barna (43.66) came in third with a 3:14.28 to close out the first day of competition.
The Cards will be back at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion for the second day of competition tomorrow at 9 a.m.
