Cardinals in First After Day One of SMU Classic

No. 8 Louisville leads No. 11 USC and No. 10 Virginia with 180 points.
DALLAS – Powered by two automatic NCAA qualifying times, eight NCAA 'B' standard times and five wins, the No. 8 University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team completed the first day of competition at the SMU Classic in first place with 180 points. No. 11 Southern California is sitting second with 152 points, followed closely by 10th-ranked Virginia with 149.
The Cardinals captured a victory in the first event of the night as Alina Kendzior (52.86), Mariia Astashkina (1:00.50), Grace Oglesby (51.23) and Mallory Comerford (46.86) combined for an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 3:31.45 in the 400 medley relay, smashing the SMU Classic record in the process.
Building on the momentum from the relay success, Sophie Cattermole ran down USC's Riley Scott on the final 50 of the 400 IM to secure another victory for the Cards in an NCAA 'B' time of 4:11.62. Diana Dunn took the top spot in the consolation heat with a 4:14.95, also an NCAA 'B' standard time.
With the third straight victory of the night, Comerford dominated in the 200 free with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:42.79. She finished nearly three seconds ahead of her closest competitor and posted the top time in the NCAA this season by nearly four seconds. Openysheva also won her heat of the 200 free, touching in an NCAA 'B' standard time of 1:45.12.
Just minutes after finishing the 200 free, Openysheva dove back into the water for the 50 free, where she finished second in another NCAA 'B' cut time of 22.51. Casey Fanz won the consolation heat with a 'B' cut time of 22.44.
In the sole diving event of the day, Molly Fears placed fourth on the 1-meter with a 261.00.
Oglesby turned in yet another win for the Cardinals, stopping the clock over a second before the second place finisher and posting a blistering NCAA 'B' cut time of 51.65 in the 100 fly. Cattermole placed second in the consolation heat with a 54.85.
In the 100 back, Kendzior matched the previous meet record with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 52.35, but finished second to USC's Louise Hansson who posted a 51.84. Fanz placed second in the consolation heat with a 55.27.
Astashkina swam to a third place finish and NCAA 'B' standard in the 100 breast, touching in a time of 1:00.35. Completing a tough double, Oglesby won the consolation heat with a time of 1:03.60.
The Cardinals closed out the evening with a triumphant win in the 800 free relay, finishing nearly six seconds ahead of the competition as Dunn (1:48.33), Openysheva (1:45.47), Cattermole (1:47.02) and Comerford (1:42.97) registered a 7:03.79.
The Cardinals will be back in action for the final day of the SMU Classic tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET.
