Cardinals Finish Strong Against Ohio State, Texas A&M

The Louisville men posted four victories on the final day of action.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11/8 University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams captured four victories on the final day of competition against No. 5/10 Texas A&M and No. 16/17 Ohio State at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Saturday.
Despite a number of strong performances, the Louisville men fell to Ohio State 192-161 and Texas A&M 190-162. With nine members of the team competing at the SMU Classic, the women were not included in the scoring results.
In the women's 200 medley relay, Annette Schultz (26.74), Morgan Friesen (29.25), Alena Kraus (25.45) and Lainey Visscher (23.58) posted a time of 1:45.02 to take fifth after a disqualification by the 'A' relay. The Louisville men kicked off the morning with a win as Nicolas Albiero (22.34), Evgenii Somov (24.95), Zach Harting (21.52) and Andrej Barna (19.55) combined for a time of 1:28.36 in the 200 medley relay.
Maggie Jahns led the Cardinals in the 400 IM (4:28.18), followed just behind by Carley Lowe with a 4:28.36. Daniel Sos recorded a second place finish in the men's event with a time of 3:53.63, while Keegan Foulke was fourth (4:00.46).
Continuing a trend of strong freshmen performances, Schultz touched fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.00. Marcelo Acosta was fifth in the men's race with a 1:39.43, while Colton Paulson was right behind in sixth (1:39.75).
Nastja Govejsek touched the wall in the time of 57.23 in the 100 fly to lead the Louisville women. In the men's event, Zach Harting captured the first individual victory of the day for Louisville with a time of 48.33. Nikolaos Sofianidis touched fourth with a 49.06.
In the 200 breast, Morgan Friesen placed second, stopping the clock in a time of 2:16.76. Somov also had a strong swim in the men's event, finishing third with a 2:02.19.
Ashlyn Schoof was the top finisher for the Cards in the 100 back with a time of 57.09. Albiero earned his second win of the weekend as he raced to the wall in a time of 48.03 in the men's event. Mitchell Whyte finished third with a 49.27.
In the women's 50 free, Avery Braunecker sprinted to a second place finish with a time of 23.26. Barna won an incredibly close 50 free race to give the Louisville men their second straight victory. He stopped the clock in a time of 20.21, just ahead of Ohio State's Teo Chavez (20.22) and Texas A&M's Adam Koster (20.23).
Jahns posted the top finish for Louisville in the 1000 free with a time of 10:29.11. In the men's event, Acosta dominated the field for his second individual victory of the meet, taking first by nearly six seconds in a time of 9:16.54.
On the 1-meter, Breanna Price had the top finish for Louisville, placing seventh with a score of 243.75. Daniel Fecteau was sixth in the men's event with a 316.80.
The 400 free relay team of Schorr (51.14), Braunecker (51.48), Schultz (50.26) and Visscher (52.21) closed out the meet with a second place finish in a time of 3:25.09. The men followed up with a third place finish as Barna (44.95), Albiero (44.27), Somov (44.87) and Harting (44.55) combined for a 2:58.23.
The Cardinals return to action on Thursday, Oct. 25 when the travel to Knoxville, Tenn. for a meet against Tennessee. Competition is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
