Cardinals Win SMU Classic Title

Louisville broke two meet records on the final day of competition.
DALLAS – Two meet records fell at the Robson & Lindley Aquatic Center as the No. 8 University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team secured the title on the final day of action at the 2018 SMU Classic. The Cardinals won the meet for the first time since 2015 with 358 points, holding off No. 11 USC with 312 points and No. 10 Virginia with 299.
The Cards picked up right where they left on the first day of competition as Alina Kendzior (24.60), Mariia Astashkina (27.53), Grace Oglesby (23.46) and Casey Fanz (21.79) broke the meet record in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:37.38.
Mallory Comerford registered another commanding win in the first individual event of the afternoon, placing first in the 500 free by nearly six seconds with an NCAA B cut time of 4:40.33. Arina Openysheva also earned an NCAA B cut time, winning the consolation heat with a 4:45.07 in what was the second fastest performance of the day.
Astashkina held off SMU's Riley Scott in the 200 breast to take second in an NCAA B cut time of 2:10.74. Sophie Cattermole also took second in the consolation heat, stopping the clock at 2:15.18.
In the 200 back, Kendzior earned another NCAA B cut, touching third with a 1:55.10. Diana Dunn placed third in the consolation heat, finishing with a time of 1:59.60.
Molly Fears finished fifth in the sole diving event of the day, posting a score of 276.00 on the 3-meter.
Comerford sprinted to her second win of the day and another NCAA B cut time of 47.57 in the 100 free. Openysheva won the consolation heat in a 48.60, once again posting the second fastest time among all competitors in the event.
Oglesby notched the second meet record of the day, smashing the previous mark in the 200 fly by over a second with an NCAA B cut time of 1:53.79. Kendzior took fifth in the consolation heat with a 1:59.54.
In the 200 IM, Astashkina registered a second place finish with a time of 2:00.48. Dunn controlled the pace in the consolation heat, touching two seconds ahead of her closest competitor in an NCAA B cut time of 1:59.46.
Louisville closed out the meet with one final win as Comerford (22.39), Fanz (21.95), Oglesby (22.30) and Openysheva (22.10) teamed up to post a time of 1:28.74 in the 200 free relay.
The Cards will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 25 in Knoxville, Tenn. when they take on Tennessee. Competition is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
