Louisville will compete against six ranked teams in a busy weekend on the road.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a dominant performance against Xavier in their 2018-19 season opener, the No. 11/8 University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams will split into two units on Friday and Saturday as select members of the women's team head to Dallas, Texas for the annual SMU Classic, while the men and remaining women travel to Columbus, Ohio for a tri-meet against Ohio State and Texas A&M.
About the Cardinals
Louisville finished first in every race last weekend en route to a sweep of Xavier at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. On the women's side, Arina Openysheva (200/500 free), Mallory Comerford (50 free/200 IM), Grace Oglesby (100/200 fly) and Alina Kendzior (100/200 back) each won two events apiece to lead the Cardinals to the victory. The Louisville men were led by double event wins from Marcelo Acosta (1000/500 free) and Evgenii Somov (100 breast/100 fly). In the exhibition diving, Molly Fears and Daniel Pinto each recorded victories on both the 1-meter and 3-meter.
The Louisville women posted a number of top-10 performances on the weekend, led by Fears who currently ranks sixth on the 1-meter (314.63) among all Division I programs. Openysheva ranks eighth in the 200 free (1:49.46), while Comerford and Oglesby are 10th in the 50 free (23.12) and 200 fly (2:00.44) respectively. The Cardinals are also sitting seventh in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.49. On the men's side, the 400 free relay ranks eighth with a time of 3:01.79.
SMU Classic
Eight swimmers and one diver from the women's team will head to the 25th annual SMU Classic, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Robson & Lindley Aquatic Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium. The Cardinals will square off against SMU, No. 11 Southern California, No. 10 Virginia, Miami and Iowa with competition beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday and 2 p.m. ET on Saturday.
Falling just a half point short of the title at last year's SMU Classic, the Cardinals will look to regain their crown for the first time since 2015 this weekend. Of the six teams competing, Louisville posted the highest finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships (5th), while Virginia (9th) and reigning SMU Classic champion USC (12th) also finished among the top-15 teams in the nation.
The nine Cardinals competing at the SMU Classic will be announced later in the week.
Ohio State/Texas A&M
The Louisville men and the remaining members of the women's team will travel to Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, where they will meet two perennial powers in a two-day tri-meet. Competition is slated to begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at 9 a.m.
The No. 5 Texas A&M women return to Columbus for their first meet of 2018-19 after capping off last season there with a third place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships. Despite the graduation of six key members from last year's squad, the Aggie women return four NCAA finalists, led by senior Sydney Pickrem who finished third in all three of her individual events. On the men's side, No. 10 Texas A&M finished second at the 2018 SEC Championships, their highest finish since joining the conference in 2013. They went on to place 13th at NCAAs, led by senior diver Sam Thornton who turned in top-10 finishes on both the 1-meter and 3-meter.
Ohio State opened their 2018-19 slate with a sweep of Alabama at the McCorckle Aquatic Pavilion. The No. 17 women won 181-119, led by Kathrin Demler who picked up individual victories in the 200 free (1:49.09) and 200 IM (2:02.92) and helped the Buckeyes to a win in the 400 medley relay. The No. 16 Buckeye men narrowly defeated the Crimson Tide 156-144. Freshman Ruslan Gaziev led Ohio State with wins in the 50 free (20.19) and 100 free (43.79), while also posting the nation-leading time in the 100 free (43.40) on the leadoff leg of the Buckeye's 400 free relay.
