Cards will face Dayton and Wright State
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a solid fall individual season, the University of Louisville women's tennis team opens its 2018 spring season with a doubleheader matchup on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals will first take on the Wright State Raiders at 10 a.m., followed by the Dayton Flyers at 4 p.m. Saturday's matches are the first two of 16 scheduled home events this season.
Â
In the tournament season, the Cards were powered by the outstanding performances of senior Mariana Humberg and Abbie Pahz. The pair posted an 11-2 fall while reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional and claiming the doubles title at the Wake Forest Invitational. Humberg also excelled in singles, going 10-2 as she reached the round of 16 at the ITA Regional and won a title at Wake Forest.
Â
In addition to the veterans, Coach Mark Beckham's Cards have received an influx of young talent with freshmen Mia Schmidt-Jorgensen and Maya Smith, and sophomore transfer Raven Neely, last season's Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year at Northern Illinois. Smith and Neely reached the main draw at the ITA Regional and Schmidt-Jorgensen reached the B-flight singles final at the event.
Â
Wright State enters the 2018 season with an overhauled roster, having lost six seniors from last year's squad that fell in the Horizon League Tournament final. Coach Eric Burns' Raiders struggled in singles in the fall season, but found a promising doubles duo in rookies Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney, who went 5-1 in exhibition play.
Â
Coach Erica Echko returns seven players from last year's Dayton team that posted a 10-12 record. The Flyers are led by senior Jade Kawamoto, who went 14-5 last season in dual play. Kawamoto is joined by fellow senior Marlys Bridgham, who has been named to the All Atlantic-10 team each year of her UD career.
