Kentucky natives lift the Cardinals to a win on Friday night
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville women's soccer team opened up the 2017 season with a 3-2 win over Boston University on Friday night in Lynn Stadium. All three of the Louisville goals were scored by Kentucky natives for the first time in program history.   Â
Louisville got on the board first in the 18th minute with a goal from sophomore Brooklynn Rivers. Gabrielle Vincent sent a pass from midfield into the box where Rivers took two touches and sent the ball past the keeper's hand for a 1-0 Louisville lead. Four minutes later Kaela Dickerman raced up the right sideline and sent a cross inside the box to Emina Ekic who blasted a shot past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.Â
The Cardinals finished the first half with a 10-1 shot advantage while holding the 2-0 lead. Louisville also finished the first half with a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.Â
The Terriers' attack stepped up in the second half, applying pressure to the Louisville defense. The pressure paid off in the 62nd minute with a header to cut the Cardinal lead to 2-1. The goal energized the Terriers as the continued to press for the equalizer.Â
Louisville was able to take some of the pressure off with a goal in the 73rd minute. Allison Whitfield was able to get past her defender and sent a shot through the keeper's hands for a 3-1 lead. A minute later BU converted a corner kick off a header to cut the lead to 3-2. The Cardinal defense held tight in the final 16 minutes to hold off a late rally by the Terriers, securing the 3-2 win. Â
The Cardinals finished the match with a 16-8 shot advantage and a 9-2 corner kick advantage. Freshman keeper Gabrielle Kouzelos finished with one save while recording her first collegiate win. BU's keeper Hannah Ciolek finished with seven saves.Â
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 20 as they host Miami (OH) in Lynn Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Â
