Cardinals record first shutout of the year, while head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes records her 150th win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Miami (OH) 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium. Senior Alison Price and junior Gabrielle Vincent scored in the win, helping the Cardinals improve to 2-0 on the season. The win was the 150th for head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes.
"The first half was not our finest performance at all, I don't think we were sharp," said Ferguson-Dayes. "I understand that playing Friday-Sunday is tough but every team in the country has to do this but I expected more from us. I think our response in the second half is exactly what we are capable of, I only wish we could have started the way we ended the game. Then again we find a lesson in every game and that's a learning lesson and we will grow and improve and get better."
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, unable to apply pressure for most of the first half. While the Cardinals did hold a slight edge in possession time, they produced the lone shot of the contest midway through the half.
After a water break timeout on the hot and humid day, the Cardinal offense gained some momentum. Louisville got on the board first in the 29th minute when Allison Whitfield raced up the right side of the field and slotted a pass to Price in the box about 10 yards out, who tapped it inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.
Both teams finished the first half with three shots. While Louisville held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks at the break.
The Cardinal offense was able to keep possession for much of the second half, holding on to a 1-0 lead. They continued to apply pressure to the Redhawks' backline while looking for the insurance goal. The Redhawks had a nice chance in the 70th minute off a free kick but Cardinal keeper Gabrielle Kouzelos made the diving save to preserve the shutout.
In the 73rd minute, Kennadi Carbin was taken down in the box by a Miami defender, resulting in a penalty kick for the Cardinals. Vincent stepped up to the line to take the kick, she patiently waited for the keeper to move first and then sent the ball to the left corner for a 2-0 Louisville lead.
Louisville finished the match with a 16-7 shot advantage, including a second half advantage of 13-4. The Cards also finished with an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kouzelos recorded her first career shutout and finished with six saves.
The Cardinals will travel to Bloomington, Ind. on Thursday, Aug. 24 to face the Indiana Hoosiers at 7:30 p.m.
