Emina Ekic and Kennadi Carbin score for the Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Indiana 2-0 on Thursday night in Bloomington. Freshman Emina Ekic and transfer Kennadi Carbin, both Louisville natives, led the Cardinals with goals in each half. The Cardinals improve to 3-0 on the season while Indiana falls to 1-2.
"I am very happy with our performance tonight," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We were good in possession, very solid defensively and created numerous quality attacking chances against a very good IU team. This is a great game for us to build off of as we look forward to a very good Marquette team on Sunday."
The Cardinals took possession to start the game, earning two corner kicks in the first six minutes. Alison Price placed the first shot on goal in the 10th minute but it was collected by the Hoosiers' keeper. Ekic struck first for the Cardinals, taking an Indiana defender one-on-one and sending the ball to the far post for a 1-0 Louisville lead.
The Hoosiers had a chance in the 28th minute but Cardinal keeper Gabrielle Kouzelos made the save. Ekic had another chance less than a minute later but the ball was collected.
Louisville finished the first half with a 9-4 shot advantage while both teams finished with four corner kicks each. Kouzelos finished with one save while IU keeper Bethany Kopel finished with two.
Like the first half, the Cardinals were able to keep possession of the ball. Brooklynn Rivers had the first shot on goal in the 52nd minute for the first shot of the half. Louisville kept possession and Carbin was able to capitalize with a goal in the 61st minute. Price sent a cross to Carbin who found an open net for the goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Hoosiers had a chance in the 79th minute but Kouzelos made the save to keep a clean slate. The Cardinals finished the match with an 18-10 shot lead while both teams finished with six corner kicks. Kouzelos finished with two saves and her second straight shutout of the season.
