This week features former standout Courtney Holtz
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- This week's Alumni Spotlight features former Cardinal, Courtney Holtz. Holtz played at Louisville from 2009 to 2012 starting all 70 games of her collegiate career. The former Cardinal great's career came to an end too soon as she tore her ACL in the 10th game of her senior season against St. John's. The injury caused an abrupt end to an amazing career for Holtz. She finished her four year career as a staple throughout her four years at UofL.
Holtz came to Louisville in 2009 from Peoria, Illinois and started all 36 games in her freshman and sophomore seasons for the Cardinals. She scored one goal and added three assists for Louisville in her first two years on the Cardinals' back line.
In 2011, her junior year was a special one for both her and the program as a whole. Holtz earned a starting role in all 24 games on the Cardinals' backline and was key component in the team's nine shutouts. The special year for the Cardinals ended in the Sweet 16 with a loss to eventual College Cup participant, Florida State.
As a senior Holtz started the initial 10 games of the year before suffering a career ending knee injury against St. John's halfway through the season. Despite the unexpected ending to her career, Holtz will be remembered as one of the great players in Cardinal history.
Coach Ferguson Dayes on Courtney Holtz:
"One of the toughest defenders I ever had the pleasure to coach. I very rarely, if ever, saw her get beat. She took tremendous pride in defending. She was a selfless member of the program and embodied the word sacrifice both as a soccer player and a teammate."
