Louisville sitting in eighth after day one
INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team competed in day one of the NCAA Women's Championships at IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. The Cards are in eighth place after one event.
Â
With only one event in contention on the first day of competition, the No. 10 Cardinals were the eighth spot in the 800-free relay putting up a school record time of 6:58.41. The foursome of Abbie Houck (1:45.35), Mallory Comerford (1:40.21), Sophie Cattermole (1:46.41) and Alex Sellers (1:46.44) put their names in the Cardinal record book. Comerford's split was also the fastest split in the field. The Stanford Cardinal took the top spot in the event with a NCAA, meet, American, and pool record time of 6:45.91.
Â
"Always great to start the meet with an All-American relay and a school record," Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach, said after day one. "That is a credit to the preparation and detail work this group has put forth all season. We will ride the positive momentum to set up a great prelim session tomorrow."
Â
Tomorrow's docket includes the 200-free relay, 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free, 400-medley relay, and 1-meter diving. Preliminary rounds begin at 10:00 a.m. EST with the finals commencing at 6:00 p.m. EST.
Â
During the four-day event, 322 participants (281 swimmers and 41 divers) will compete in the championships. Swimmers qualified for the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered, while the divers were determined by competing in last weeks NCAA Zone Diving Meets.
