Women's Swimming and Diving Moves into Fourth After Day 2 at ACCs

The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team medaled, set a school record and had a NCAA relay A-Cut to move into fourth place after two days of racing at the 2017 ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in McAuley Aquatics Center Tuesday night on the campus of Georgia Tech.

Entering the day in sixth place, NC State won three of the four swimming events claim the meet lead with 452.5 points followed by Virginia (385.5), North Carolina (3 84), Louisville (383), Duke (315), Florida State (297), Virginia Tech (266), Miami (228), Notre Dame (218), Pitt (195), Georgia Tech (141, Boston College (92) and Clemson (73).
"We had a great prelims session this morning and that set us up for a fun finals session including a new school record by Mallory Comerford in the 500 freestyle. It was nice to see our 200 free style relay with three freshmen finish the session just short from our school record. The next sessions will be fun," said Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach.

Mallory Comerford won silver with a time of 4:37.47 in the 500-freestyle as the only Cardinal to medal this evening. In the B-final, Emily Moser was second with a 4:46.11. In the C-final, Sophie Cattermole was second with a time of 4:46.78. Olympian Leah Smith won the A-final by almost seven full seconds, turning in a pool record time of 4:30.81.

In the 200-IM A-final, Alina Kendzior was 5th (1:58.27), Rachael Bradford-Feldman 6th (1:59.15), and Andrea Cottrell 8th 1:59.18. In the C-final, freshman Grace Oglesby was second with a time of 1:59.43 with senior Alex Sellers right on her heels for third in 1:59.65. The event was won by NC State's Alexia Zevnik's 1:54.44, which was an A-cut and a meet record.

In the 50-free, freshman Casey Fanz was into the wall in 22.19 for seventh place in the A-final. Lainey Visscher was 12th overall, touching third in the B-final with a 22.31. Nastja Govejsek was fifth in the C-final with a time of 22.80. The event was won by NC State freshman Ky-lee Perry's 21.88.

In 1-meter diving, Andrea Acquista posted a 246.65 for 20th place and Molly Fears was 27th with a 239.55 in prelims.

In the 200-Free Relay, the Cards' Lainey Visscher (22.63), Mallory Comerford (21.59), Nastja Govejsek (22.57), and Casey Fanz (21.69) put together a 1:28.48 for fourth place. The Cardinals cut 1.22 off their qualifying time and got an NCAA A-cut. NC State took home gold with a winning time of 1:27.31.

The 2017 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships resume Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. with preliminaries for the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. The finals for those events, in addition to the men's 3-meter diving and the 400 medley relay, will get underway at 6 p.m.
