Swimming Brings Home Hardware From European Championships

Four Cardinals Competed in London at European Championships
LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Cardinals Grigory Tarasevich, Andrea Kneppers, Alina Kendzior and Tanja Kylliainen returned home to Louisville this week with some hardware after a successful week at the European Championships which were held in London,England at the London Aquatic Center, site of the 2012 Olympic Games, from May 16-23.

Tarasevich, a junior from Omsk, Russia, highlighted the week for the Cardinals, qualifying for all three backstroke finals in which he earned a silver medal in the 100 Back (53.89) and bronze medal in the 50 Back (24.86).

Kneppers, a senior from Schagen, Netherlands, also brought home a bronze medal as the leadoff leg of the Netherlands 4x200 Freestyle Relay which battled a tough European field to place third (7:53.63) which was the first medal for the Dutch in that relay since 1995.

Former Cardinal Kylliainen, who represents Finland internationally, raced well amongst her preparation for the Rio Olympics. She made her first long course meter international semifinal in the 200 IM (2:15.96) and placed 13th.

Kendzior, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, who represents Estonia internationally competed well throughout the week of her first large international competition, which was highlighted by qualifying for the finals in the Mixed 4x100 Freestyle Relay. She anchored the relay in 56.87 that placed eighth.

The Cards will be back in action next weekend at the Indianapolis Arena Pro Swim Series June 3-5 which will serve as the final tune-up before heading to Omaha for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials June 26-July 3.
