Hummel pitches career best seven innings in the win; Fitch finishes 4-for-5 with three RBI
A native of Olathe, Kansas, Hummel allowed two runs on five hits in his longest outing in a Cardinals uniform to earn his first win and move to 1-0 on the season. Making just his second start for Louisville (25-7), Hummel worked three innings longer than his previous best outing of four innings against Xavier on March 15.
Fitch finished the night 4-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBI and three runs scored as the Cardinals had a 16-6 advantage in hits against the Hilltoppers (18-14). With Tuesday's performance on Cancer Awareness Night, Fitch lifted his season batting average to .468 with 21 RBI and 19 runs scored in 16 starts. Four other Louisville players had two hits each highlighted by sophomore third baseman Blake Tiberi, who was 2-of-3 with a home run, a double and a career-best four RBI. It was the team-leading 17th multiple-hit game this season for Tiberi, who is hitting .373 this season with a team-leading 12 doubles and five home runs.
Sophomore Brendan McKay was 2-for-5 with two RBI and scored once, while sophomore shortstop Devin Hairston finished 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored for Louisville, which swept the two-game season series with WKU by a combined score of 31-2. Sophomore outfielder Ryan Summers came off the bench to finish 2-for-2 with a run scored and freshman second baseman Devin Mann doubled to extend his career-best hitting streak to nine games.
WKU opened the scoring on Tuesday with a run in the top of the first on a RBI double to right center by Danny Hudzina, but the lead was short-lived after Louisville answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. McKay started the scoring with a RBI single through the right side to plate Fitch and Hairston followed with a RBI double down the left field line to score Mann. Tiberi added a two-run double to center sending McKay and Hairston home for the 4-1 lead.
Louisville added to the lead with a run in the second inning on a two-out RBI double down the left field line by Mann to score Fitch. The Cardinals ended any thoughts on a comeback for the Hilltoppers with a six-run fourth inning. Fitch continued his strong performance at the plate with a three-run triple to right center scoring redshirt freshman Drew Ellis, junior outfielder Logan Taylor and junior outfielder Corey Ray. Following a RBI single by McKay, Tiberi connected for his ninth career home run sending a two-run shot out to right center.
The Hilltoppers ended Louisville's scoring spree in the fifth inning on Hunter Wood's first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field. Louisville followed with a pair of runs in the seventh on RBI groundballs by Taylor and Ray. The Cardinals scored their final run of the night in the eighth inning on a run-scoring single to left by Josh Stowers, the first collegiate RBI for the freshman.
Sophomore righty Sean Leland followed Hummel by pitching two innings of shutout relief. Lefty starter Logan Weins took the loss for the Hilltoppers and dropped to 2-2 on the season after allowing seven runs on eight hits in three innings.
Up next, No. 6 Louisville takes to the road for a visit to ninth-ranked Kentucky tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington.
