No. 2 Cardinals open season with back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts for first time since 1987
The Cardinals not only improved to 2-0 on the season but did so scoring 10 or more runs in back-to-back games to open a season for the first time since 1987, when they did it in four straight outings. Saturday's game, which followed yesterday's 21-4 season-opening triumph, was played in front of an announced crowd of 3,838 setting a school attendance record for the month of February.
Sophomore lefthander Brendan McKay, the nation's top two-way player a year ago, picked up where he left off during his rookie season as the National Freshman of the Year striking out eight in five shutout innings on the mound and connecting for a three-run homer at the plate on Saturday. The Darlington, Pa., native allowed three hits and worked around four walks while recording at least eight strikeouts in a game for the eighth time in his collegiate career. The home run, which highlighted Louisville's eight-run fifth inning, was the fifth of the career for McKay, who also earned his 10th collegiate victory on the mound.
Junior outfielder Corey Ray registered his second straight multi-hit performance finishing 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and three stolen bases. Junior Colin Lyman added his second multi-hit game in as many days going 2-for-2 with a three-run double and a stolen base. Junior outfielder Logan Taylor chipped in with a two-run triple, his second three-bagger in as many days, while junior second baseman Nick Solak set a school record earning five walks.
Following McKay on the mound Saturday was senior righty Anthony Kidston, who finished with five strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief. Junior lefty Dylan Shoffner made his debut with the Cardinals by registering a strikeout in a scoreless eighth inning before redshirt freshman righty Chandler Dale delivered a scoreless ninth inning to complete the shutout.
For the second consecutive game, the Cardinals garnered command with a two-run first inning as Ray opened the scoring by belting a 2-1 offering from SIUE (0-2) starter Jarrett Bednar over the right field wall for his first home run of the season and the 13th of his collegiate career. Senior first baseman Danny Rosenbaum added a RBI single for the two-run lead.
After the Cardinals plated a run in the second on a RBI single from Ray and another run in the fourth on a RBI sacrifice fly to center by Ray, they put the game out of reach with the eight-run fifth. The big inning included the three-run double from Lyman, the two-run triple by Taylor and the three-run homer from McKay.
The Cardinals and Cougars will conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m., ET and admission is free. The game will be aired live on 93.9 The Ville.
