The Cardinals (9-16, 4-11) hit .191 and overcame 13 service errors with nine blocks and 56 kills. The Irish (19-8, 10-5) hit .112 with 46 kills and 6.5 blocks. UofL had two other players join Miller in double digit kills with Melanie McHenry adding 14 with 18 digs for a double-double and Janelle Jenkins pitching in 13 with three blocks. Libero Molly Sauer had a career high 38 digs. The Irish were led by Jemma Yeadon's 12 kills and three blocks.
Â
"How fun was that?" said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. Molly Sauer passed out of her mind. We did not have many practices to work on this new lineup but they played hard and adapted on the fly. Morgan Miller was on fire and how fun was that for her. Megan Sloan provided a spark off the bench when we needed it. I am just so happy for our kids."
Â
UofL used a 5-1 run early in the first set to stay close to Notre Dame, powered by a block and a kill by Jasmine Bennett. Notre Dame countered to take a 20-17 lead but UofL scored three consecutive points to get within one at 21-20 and spark an Irish timeout. But Louisville was outscored 4-2 down the stretch as the Irish won 25-22. The Cards were plagued with five service errors in the first stanza, although both teams were south of .200 hitting.Â
Â
The Cards used a 6-0 run to take a 16-8 lead in the second set. Notre Dame had a 4-1 run to pull within 21-17, causing UofL to call timeout to reset. The Irish fended off three set points before falling 25-21.
Â
UofL used two 5-0 runs to go up 14-9 on the Irish early in the third set. The Irish battled back to tie at 17 but Cards were not having it, as they powered to a 25-20 win. Tess Clark led with four kills in the set.
Â
In the final set, Louisville ran out to a 13-9 lead after a 3-0 run powered by aggressive serving by Lyndsay Palmer to force Notre Dame to use its first timeout. Down 19-13, the Irish scored three straight to get within four at 19-15. UofL slowly pulled away getting to match point at 24-19 but the Irish staved off defeat for three straight points and Louisville had to call timeout to regroup. ND's Sydney Kuhn, who had scored three straight times missed on the final set point to give UofL the 25-22 win.
Â
The Cards play host to ACC foe Virginia on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
