Tess Clark leads with 9 kills and a block
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Virginia powered past Louisville in straight sets behind Jasmine Burton's 16 kills in ACC volleyball action on Friday night at Cardinal Arena
Â
The Louisville Cardinals (9-17, 4-12) fell 25-22, 25-22, 25-20  to the Cavaliers (6-21, 3-12).  UofL's Tess Clark led the way with nine kills and one block while hitting .353 for the Cards. Jasmine Bennett added six kills along with Morgan Miller's five kills and 10 assists. Virginia had a hot hand with .355 hitting and aced the Cards seven times. The Cavs were led by Haley Kole's 16 kills and two digs. Jennifer Wineholt added four kills and three aces  for the Cavaliers.
"I thought that was a breakout match for Jasmine Bennett," said Anne Kordes, UofL head coach. "It was fun to watch her ability to dominate the net but we have to get her the ball. She made some big time shots and I think our fans got a glimpse of her unlimited potential. Â Tess Clark did a phenomenal job of always being an option. Â We just need to bounce back and get better."
Â
Virginia jumped out to an early lead with a 5-1 run in the first set.. The Cards were able to keep it close throughout, but could never secure a lead. The Cards got within two, at 17-15, but that was the close as they would get. Louisville's .333 attack percentage was trumped by Virginia's .345, which proved to be the slight edge Virginia needed en route to the 25-22 victory.
Â
The second was a close-fought battle with 11 ties and five lead changes. Louisville held the lead  at 4-3, 6-4, 8-5, and 12-11. Melanie McHenry's second kill of the set, along with a UVA service error, had the score knotted up at 21-21. A 4-1 run ended the set for the Cavaliers with a 25-22 win. Jasmine Bennett added two kills, Morgan Miller added three, but their efforts weren't enough to top the .481 attack percentage by Virginia. Â
Â
Another quick start by Virginia proved to be trouble for the Cards. A 5-2 start was erased, however, by the Cards as they took the lead, 6-5 behind a pair of kills from McHenry and Clark. Virginia then opened up a 5-1 run to push their lead back out to 10-7. Louisville fought back again to make it 13-13 and that would be the last time they shared the lead. Virginia closed out the third set with six kills and an ace to finish  the Cards 25-20.
Â
Louisville travels to Atlanta on Friday, Nov. 18 to square off against the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech at 7:00 p.m. for their next match.
