Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Georgia Tech

Maggie DeJong hits .421 with eight kills off the bench
Teegan Van Gunst had 17 kills and 12 digs to lead Georgia Tech to a 3-1 win over the University of Louisville in ACC volleyball action Friday evening in Atlanta.
"What a match for Maggie DeJong," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. "It was a heck of fight from both teams tonight. We had a number of times where we got down and we managed to get back in the match and showed some guts, which is what I have been waiting for and hoping to see. Â Georgia Tech has had the same lineup for three years and their experience showed, especially in tight spots."

UofL (9-18, 4-13) hit .208 and had nine blocks and 75 digs. Melanie McHenry pace the Cards with 11 kills, 12 digs and two aces.  Maggie DeJong came off the bench and had 8 kills , hitting .421 with four blocks. Jasmine Bennett added nine kills and a block. Tess Clark led all blockers with seven. Georgia Tech had 7 blocks, hit .187 and aced the Cardinals. The Yellow Jackets got 14 kills by Gabriela Stavnetchel.

The Cardinals fell 29-27 in the first set, hitting .087 and being out-hit 19-11 in kills. UofL had three set points but a pesky Tech squad kept counterpunching, led by Teegan Van Gunst's seven kills. Maggie DeJong had three kills and three blocks for the Cards.

In the second set, UofL overcame a sluggish start, falling 15-6 but a 9-0 later put them back in contention when they tied at 19. Tied at 23, UofL missed a pair of serves but held off Georgia Tech before falling 26-24. Melanie McHenry led with four kills in the set.

The Cardinals used .303 hitting in the third set to win 25-20 with a 6-2 run to end the set. UofL was led by Jasmine Bennett and Tess Clark who combined for six kills.

Georgia Tech had a 8-1 run early in the fourth set to take a 14-6 lead. The Cardinals got within one at 19-18 but fell 25-19. Morgan Miller, Jasmine Bennett and Melanie McHenry each had three kills to lead the Cards. Â
