Cards roof Pirates 16 times

Maya McClendon had 10 kills, two aces and seven blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-10, 25-21 sweep of Seton Hall in the second match of the Active Ankle Challenge in Cardinal Arena Saturday morning.

UofL had a season high 16 blocks, led by Maggie DeJong's eight and hit .278 as a team, adding seven aces. Freshman libero Molly Sauer had a career-high four aces and team-high 15 digs. Erin Fairs had 12 kills, hitting a season-high .423, adding an ace and a dig. Seton Hall was led by Amanda Hansen's 8 kills. The Pirates hit .036 and managed only five blocks.

"We were siding out at 77 percent and then add 16 blocks in three sets and that is hard to beat," said Anne Kordes, UofL head coach. "It just goes to show we were able to control the match both offensively and defensively. We had phenomenal serving, especially from Molly Sauer. It is really hard to single out one particular player because we were working very hard to execute our game plan. It feels good to get two wins in a row after a brutal non-conference schedule so far."

Although there were seven ties, Seton Hall led only twice in the first set. The Cards raised the roof with nine blocks, three by Maya McClendon as they cruised to a 25-16 win. Hitting just .220, the Cards used scrambling defense with 23 digs, led by Molly Sauer's seven.

The Cardinals roared out to a 11-1 lead in the second set and never looked back. Hitting .406 and adding six aces in the game kept SHU back on its heels. Sauer had four aces with Maya McClendon adding a pair for the 25-10 win.

The Pirates regrouped at the break and stayed close, even tying at 10 but .050 hitting and being blocked five times did little for their cause. UofL had a 10-5 run to go up 20-15 and put SHU behind the eight ball. The Pirates put up a fight, getting to 23-20 on a Cardinal service error before kills by Erin Fairs and Maya McClendong closed the book on the set 25-21.

The Cards play the nightcap when they face Ohio University at 7:30 in the final matchup of the Challenge.
