August 20, 2015 | Women's Soccer
The University of Louisville women's soccer team will open up the 2015 season this weekend at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium when they host Wright State and No. 20 Washington for two matches. The Cardinals will face Wright State on Friday for their home opener at 7:30 p.m. before hosting the nationally-ranked Huskies on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. USA Women's National Soccer Team head coach Jill Ellis will make an appearance during the game and will be a special guest for the postgame free clinic with the U of L women's soccer team.
The Cardinals are led by head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes, who begins her 16th season with the Cardinals. The Cards return 14 letterwinners, including senior forward Casey Whitfield, who sat out the 2014 season due to injury. The Louisville native scored six goals and added six assists during the 2013 campaign.
Wright State enters the 2015 season after compiling a 6-10-1 record overall last season. The Raiders return seven of last year's top scorers including senior forward Natalie Sedlock who led the Raiders with five goals last season. Goalkeeper Halle Pyle led the Raiders with a 0.95 goals-against average.
The Raiders lead the series 12-2-1 against Louisville, with the Cardinals winning the most recent contest 2-1 last season on the road in Dayton. Sophomore Isabella Habuda came off the bench to score both goals to lead the Cardinals to a win in their 2014 season opener.
Nationally-ranked Washington is coming off a successful season in which the Huskies made their fourth Sweet Sixteen appearance in program history. The Huskies went 14-7-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the Pac 12. Washington is coached by Lesle Gallimore, who is entering her 22nd season at the helm and returns 12 players who saw significant minutes last season. Senior goalkeeper Megan Kufeld is back in goal after totaling nine shutouts last season. The Huskies also return top scorer and member of the 2014 Pac-12 All-Freshman team, sophomore forward Kimby Keever, who scored six goals last season.
This weekend's matchup will be the first meeting between the two teams.
