LUBBOCK, Texas - Louisville freshman Brendan McKay was named on Thursday morning as one of three finalists for the 2015 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, presented by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
McKay is joined by East Carolina senior lefthanded pitcher and outfielder Reid Love and Oral Roberts senior lefty pitcher and infielder Anthony Sequeira. The Olerud Award, to be presented as part of the Hall of Fame's Night of Champions celebration on June 28-29 in Lubbock, Texas, is named for the former Washington State University standout who achieved success both as a first baseman and left-handed pitcher during the late 1980s and who was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
Having previously been named First Team All-America and Freshman All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, McKay had a 9-3 record with a 1.77 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 96.2 innings and 20 appearances on the mound, including 13 straight weekend starts for the Cardinals in 2015. An All-ACC First Team selection as a pitcher and a Second Team honoree as a utility player, McKay hit .308 with four home runs, 34 RBI, 38 walks and 32 runs scored in 58 starts as a hitter.
The 2015 ACC Freshman of the Year, McKay will report to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in Cary, N.C., on June 18 looking to earn a spot on the 24-man roster during the team trials. Louisville ended the 2015 season with a 47-18 record after advancing to its third straight NCAA Super Regional.
