No. 22 Volleyball Sweeps Virginia Tech

Cards are 13-1 in ACC
Erin Fairs had a match-high 13 kills, two aces and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of ACC foe Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in the KFC Yum! Center.

The Cards improved to 13-1 in the ACC and 19-5 overall. UofL hit .378 with three aces and four blocks. Janelle Jenkins joined Fairs in double digit kills with 11 and Maya McClendon added 12 kills from the bench. Tech was led by Lindsey Owens, who had seven kills but left the match early in the second set with an injury.
"We got a chance to play just about everyone and we do that to not just to reward kids for their hard work, but to get a glimpse of the future," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. Â "Erin continues to be an offensive force for us and it has been great to see her continue to grow her game."

The first set was tight but although there were only two lead changes. Tied at 18, the Cards ran off four straight to get some breathing room at 22-18 on a pair of blocks. Tech pushed back and after acing the Cards to get to 23-21, Kordes called timeout. Tess Clark got a kill from the middle for set point and then Janelle Jenkins scored from the left side to give the Cards the 25-21 win. The Cards hit .433 in the first set, led by Erin Fairs four kills.

The Cards powered out to an 11-3 lead in the second set when Virginia Tech's leading hitter, Lindsey Owens, went down with an ankle injury. The Cards spread the lead to 19-9 and then emptied the bench, getting three kills from freshman Jasmine Bennett and Ashley Pettibone's first kill as a Cardinal. UofL hit .252 with two blocks in the 25-19 win.

In the third set, the Cardinals used a 5-1 run to move to a 15-10 lead and force Tech to call timeout early in the third set. Louisville  kept scoring and the H;okies had to burn their final time out when they went down 18-11. A pair of kills by Maya McClendon and two by Erin Fairs took the Cards up 22-14. VT rallied to close the margin to four at 23-19. Janelle Jenkins had a kill to take the Cards to match point and then  Erin Fairs parked one from the left side for the 25-19 win.

The Cardinals next head for a showdown with Florida State, who have shared the lead in the ACC with UofL until this week. The Seminoles are 11-2 and will play the Cards on Sunday Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Â in Tallahassee after facing Miami on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. The Hurricanes are 10-4 in the league, and knocked off FSU earlier this week.Â
