November 20, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
Cards move to 16-1 in ACC
Senior outside hitter Erin Fairs had 16 kills, hitting .538 to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a sweep of the Clemson Tigers 25-20, 25-14, 25-19 at the KFC Yum! Center on Friday night.
Â
The Cardinals improved to 22-5 overall and 16-1 ACC as senior setter Katie George added 40 assists and Molly Sauer led the Cardinals with 16 digs. Louisville finished with a .402 attack percentage compared to .202 for Clemson.
Â
"We're excited, siding out at 77 percent. I think that's a big reason we could get our setters in there and let them go to work," head coach Anne Kordes said. "They've got every option that they want when we pass that well. Honestly, hats off to the whole team today. I'm real proud of them. I love when I can get kids in there and they do a great job. It just says a lot about what's coming next in the future."
Â
The first set was tightly contested early until Louisville used an 8-3 run to take a 12-8 lead. Clemson pulled within 15-14 before Louisville forced a Tigers timeout on a kill by Tess Clark and the Cards leading 21-17. Louisville would gain set point 24-20 on a dump by Katie George and claimed the set 25-20 on a Clemson net fault. The Cards hit .385 for the set compared to .212 for the Tigers.
Â
In the second, Louisville jumped out to a 12-5 lead behind four early kills by Erin Fairs. Another run, this one 6-1 after six straight kills from the Cardinals extended the lead to 18-6. The Tigers responded with a 6-2 run of their own to close the gap to 20-12. A pair of Maya McClendon kills followed by a kill from Maggie DeJong gave Louisville the 24-14 advantage before a Clemson attack error gave the Cardinals the set 25-14.
Â
The third set started with a seesaw battle until Louisville used a 5-1 run to open a 13-8 advantage on a kill by Maya McClendon. The Cardinals would extend the lead to 21-13 on an Erin Fairs kill but Clemson did not go away. The Tigers closed within 23-19 but back-to-back kills from seniors Katie George and Erin Fairs closed out the match 25-19 for the Cards in the third.
Â
The Cardinals return to action Sunday afternoon as they host Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. for Senior Day at the KFC Yum! Center.
