Cards move to 7-0 in ACC
Freshman Aniah Philo had 16 kills and five digs to lead the No. 25-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-21 sweep of Wake Forest Friday night in the KFC Yum! Center.
Â
The Cards remain unbeaten in the ACC at 7-0 and are 13-4 overall. UofL hit .346 with six blocks and 2 aces. Erin Fairs joined Philo in double digit kills with 12, adding two blocks. Katie George had 10 digs and match-high 42 assists for a double-double. Wake Forest was led by Kyle Long's nine kills.
Â
"I thought we did a good job of either blocking or getting our hands on the block. We had a good game plan but didn't always execute it, so we will have to improve on that before facing Duke on Sunday. Wake Forest is a good, scrappy team and they showed that with their comeback in sets one and three. So it is a situation where I am very proud of the way my team reacted to their push," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. Â
Â
In the first set, UofL struggled to pull away from a tenacious Wake team, which tied six times, the last knot coming at 17. UofL got some breathing room late as they ran off the final five points of the set for the 25-20 win. The Cards hit .229 to WFU's -.029. UofL was plagued by five service errors but did have 16 digs.
Â
The Cards jumped on the Deacons early in the second set, going up 9-4 and managed to stave off a late WFU rally that closed the gap to 22-14 but the Cards closed down the rally with three straight for the 25-14 win. Philo had nine kills in the set to lead the Cards' offense.
Â
UofL scored the first five points of the third set, but Wake rallied to stay close. Tied at 17, the Cards outscored the Deacons 8-4 down the stretch for the 25-21 win.
Â
The Cards take on Duke at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the KFC Yum! Center.Â
