Literacy Campaign
Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville Women's Soccer Team has been very busy this spring both on and off the field. The Cardinals began the spring training season at the 7v7 University of Illinois Tournament in Champaign, Ill. on March 1. The team defeated South Dakota, Indiana State, and Evansville in the preliminary rounds before taking down Evansville again in the tournament semifinal. The Cardinals rounded out play with an 8-2 championship victory over host Illinois and ended the day of competition without a loss.
Freshman Kari Weinland and sophomore Lexie Niedoba led the team in scoring with eight goals apiece, while freshman goalkeeper Paige Brown registered key minutes in goal. Weinland played in all 19 games for the Cardinals this past fall and registered one assist and 13 shots, six of which were on goal, while Niedoba scored one goal on 11 shots, seven of which were on goal. Brown began her collegiate career playing in 17 games with 16 starts and helped lead the team to a 12-5-2 record for the season.
Literacy Campaign
The Cardinals have also spent some time off of the field this spring focusing on the team's Literacy Campaign. The campaign kicked off last week with players volunteering their time to read at local elementary schools. The team read Dr. Seuss books such as "O the Places You'll Go" and " The Cat in the Hat" to Pre K through 2nd graders in honor of Dr. Seuss week. The Cardinals also passed out Louisville Women's Soccer bookmarks and wore Cat in the Hat-inspired hats marked with the Louisville Soccer emblem.
The team will continue practicing throughout the spring in order to prepare for the 2014 regular season set to begin this coming fall. Louisville will now play three home matches at Cardinal Park, beginning with a contest against Middle Tennessee on March 22 at 1:00 p.m. The team will then take on Ohio State on March 29 at 1:00 p.m. and Tennessee on April 5 at 1:00 p.m.
