LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Here is the latest Louisville baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the Cardinals' 19 players competing this summer.
Louisville's 19 underclassmen are assigned to four different wooden bat leagues around the nation as well as the USA Collegiate National Team. Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in late August to continue Louisville's preparation for the 2014 college baseball season.
Listed below are updates on the progress of some of the Cardinals during summer league action as well as a complete list of 2013 Louisville baseball summer assignments.

USA Collegiate National Team
- Righty Nick Burdi has two scoreless relief appearances for Team USA this summer. In his two innings of work, the Cardinals' All-American pitcher has four strikeouts while scattering two hits without a decision.
Cape Cod League
- In 18 games for the Wareham Gatemen, Cole Sturgeon is hitting .263 with four stolen bases, five doubles, a triple, seven runs scored and six RBI as the everyday centerfielder. He has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, including going 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in a win over Bourne on July 17. On July 5, he was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. On the mound, the lefty has made two shutout relief appearances striking out four in three innings pitched.
- Righthander Kyle Funkhouser has a team-high three saves with a 1.28 ERA and eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched this summer for the Chatham Anglers. In his last outing on July 16, he had a strikeout in a scoreless inning of relief and he has not allowed a run in any of his last three outings covering a span of five innings.
- In 15 games for the Bourne Braves, outfielder/catcher Jeff Gardner is hitting .259 with four RBI and three doubles. In the last four games, he is 8-for-14 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. That includes a 3-for-4 night at the plate on July 17 with two doubles and two RBI against Wareham.
- During three appearances on the mound, including one start, righty Jared Ruxer has a 2.79 ERA with eight strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched for Wareham. Without a decision in his three outings, his best showing to this point came on July 4 when he pitched 3.1 innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts against Bourne.
- On July 8, infielder Danny Rosenbaum was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored to lead Wareham to a 12-7 win over Hyannis. Overall, Rosenbaum is hitting .209 with five RBI and four runs scored in 15 games played for the Gatemen.
New England League
- In 19 games for the Keene Swamp Bats, infielder Zach Lucas is hitting .313 with three home runs, three doubles, 13 RBI, 14 runs scored and six stolen bases. During a three-game stretch over a span of two days on July 15-16, Lucas went 12-for-17 with two home runs, two doubles, five RBI and eight runs scored.
- Lefthander Robert Strader has been terrific this summer for the Vermont Mountaineers working a 2-0 record with a 0.55 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched and eight relief appearances. Most recently, he threw two innings of shutout relief with two strikeouts in Vermont's win over Plymouth on July 16.
- Righthander Jonah Philley earned his second win of the summer for the Saratoga Brigade on July 16 when he pitched seven shutout innings striking out four while scattering six hits in a victory against North Adams. Overall, Philley is 2-1 on the mound with a 3.60 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched, including five appearances and four starts.
- During six relief appearances on the mound for the Newport Gulls, lefty Kyle McGrath has a 1.80 ERA and nine strikeouts in 10 innings pitched. With a 0-1 record overall, McGrath had four strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief in the Gulls' win over Sanford on July 17.
- In 25 games for the Saratoga Brigade, infielder Jordan Striegel is hitting .243 with one home run, eight RBI and nine runs scored. Only July 9, he went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI against Danbury.
Coastal Plain League
- In 10 games played, including nine starts for the High Point-Thomasville HiToms, outfielder Mike White is hitting .300 with three doubles, five RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases.
