LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior defender Rachel Melhado earned her first international cap for the Canadian National Team after seeing game action in an international friendly against Germany on Wednesday in Paderborn, Germany.
After entering the match in the 70th minute, Melhado (Brampton, Ont./Turner Fenton HS) played the final 20 minutes on Team Canada's backline in the 1-0 loss to Germany. One of just 17 players on the Canadian roster for the match, Melhado represented herself well in her debut for the senior team.
The match wrapped up a five-day camp for Canada in Germany. Overall, 19 players participated in the camp for Canada. A complete recap of the match is available on the official website of the Canadian Soccer Association.
In three seasons in Louisville, Melhado has been one of the Cardinals' most dependable defenders starting in 55 games along the team's backline. On the international side, Melhado started all three games for Canada at the 2012 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Japan.
