LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville senior defender Rachel Melhado was named to the Canadian National Team's 18-player roster for an international friendly against Germany on Wednesday (June 19) in Paderborn, Germany.
It marks the first call-up to the senior team for Melhado, a Brampton, Ont., native who has previously competed for Canada's U-18 and U-20 teams. She has also been featured in Canada's most recent EXCELeration camp, part of Canada's talent identification scheme for the women's national team.
"Melhado's been tracking well throughout the year in the various EXCELeration camps and has earned a call-up," said Canadian head coach John Herdman. "She is an aggressive, athletic defender and she showed good composure on the ball at last year's FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup."
In three seasons in Louisville, Melhado has been one of the Cardinals' most dependable defenders starting in 55 games along the team's backline. On the international side, Melhado started all three games for Canada at the 2012 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Japan.
