LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Hannah Konermann, a rising sophomore defender for the University of Louisville women's soccer team, idolized Louisville sports, especially the Louisville women's soccer team.
A native of Louisville, Konermann attended summer camps held by the Louisville women's soccer program as a young girl.
"When I was little, I used to go to at least one summer camp every single year, thinking it was the coolest thing to be coached by Louisville women soccer players," said Konermann.
Little did Konermann know that she would end up being a member of the Cardinals' soccer team in the future. Like most Division I athletes, she began playing soccer at a young age and developed a work ethic and discipline to become a member of the team she once idolized. Konermann credits her father for providing the foundation for her skills on and off the pitch.
"I began playing soccer when I was 3 years old, with my dad as my coach," she said. "He is definitely one of my role models when it comes to soccer. He has helped shape me into the hard-working individual I am on and off the field, because he always pushed me to do my best."
The foundation skills her father provided allowed for Konermann's club coaches to further develop her game when she began club soccer at age 8.
"It wasn't only my dad. I am lucky to be able to say that I have had incredible coaches all my life," explained Konermann. "I always had supportive coaches, and I am very thankful for that. They kept the fire burning inside me that I should never be satisfied and to always push to be better."
Konermann finally realized her dream to play for the Louisville women's soccer club, but her debut would be delayed when she tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee the summer before her freshman season. After a year of recovery and rehab, Hannah made her debut in the spring of 2012.
"I spent the entire spring figuring out my role on the field with my teammates," Konermann said. "By the time the fall came around, I knew what was expected of me as a member of the Cardinal soccer family."
Konermann has been named a Dean's Scholar and a Red & Black Scholar and was named to the Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll. A double major in French and chemistry, she hopes to attend medical school in the future.
