LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Caring for the city of Louisville by volunteering at community service events is a priority for the University of Louisville women's soccer program and the Cardinals have been very active in that endeavor in 2013.
Last month, UofL participated in the Read Across America program by visiting Engelhard Elementary School, while less than two weeks later, Louisville players kicked off the month of March with a visit to Down Syndrome of Louisville to talk with members there and to receive an award on behalf of the University of Louisville Athletic Department.
On Feb. 21, Louisville defender Rachel Melhado read to second and third grade students at Engelhard for Read Across America. She read the book "Henry Gets Moving" which highlights the importance of being physically active, eating right and how those choices are healthy for your body. After reading the book, Melhado talked with the students about what they do to stay active, what it means to be healthy and the healthy choices they can make.
On March 1, Jenna Andersen, Melhado, Angelika Uremovich, Nicole Mitchell, Irene Young, Erin Yenney, Christine Exeter and Katie Walz attended Down Syndrome of Louisville Awards Night and received the 2013 Garry Gupton Community Award on behalf of the UofL Athletic Department. After receiving the award from the DSL Board of Directors, the Louisville players danced the night away with members of the local group.
