Throughout the spring semester, GoCards.com will provide weekly updates on the Louisville women's soccer program in the "Behind the Scenes" blog. For the month of February, Nicole Gerber will give a glimpse into the world of the Cardinals.

Out of the hundreds of student-athletes on campus here at UofL, it's no wonder that there are a handful of talented athletes... but I'm not just talking about athleticism.
For the third year in a row, University of Louisville Dance Marathon put together an annual Student-Athlete Talent Show, where teams competed against each other for the almighty first-place trophy, and of course, endless bragging rights. We created our own skits and showcased whatever talents we may possess, whether it be raw talent, or the ability to make a fool of ourselves via dancing or other creative means.
Being a freshman, I didn't know what the talent show was all about, but on Tuesday Jan. 29, I was quickly informed. It was athletes as performers, as inventors, as musicians, all using their competitive, creative minds for the longing of coming in first place.
It just so happens that women's soccer won this year! We danced and sang and unicycled. We came together as a unit and surprisingly, we were as nervous for the performance as we would be with any game. And claiming that first-place trophy just ties it all together. Now, here come the bragging rights!
Along with performing for our fellow athletes, our coaches and the people behind the scenes, each year we choose a charity to raise money for. Our "Jar-Wars" (competitions between teams to see who can raise as much money and put it in a jar) and the donations made at the talent show supply us with the money to donate to that charity. This year, we are supporting Kosair Children's Hospital. We've raised over $1,600 so far, and it's an unbelievable feeling when the student-athlete community comes together to make that possible.
That's one of the lessons I've learned here in my short time as a Cardinal athlete: It doesn't matter how competitive each and every single one of us are, because when we come together and unite for a single goal, that is when our Cardinal family is its strongest. And it's really a privilege to say that... I am a Louisville Cardinal.
