
Women's Soccer Opens BIG EAST Slate with Road Tests

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After winning of five of six non-conference games in the first four weeks of the season, Louisville will open BIG EAST Conference action this weekend with a pair of road games at Notre Dame and DePaul.
In its last outing, Louisville (5-1-0) got two goals from Angelika Uremovich to lead the way in a 3-1 win over Toledo on the final day of the 2012 Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic last Sunday at Cardinal Park. After trailing 1-0 early in the second half, the Cards clinched the win with three goals in a 22-minute stretch.
Notre Dame enters the weekend at 3-3-1 overall after earning a 1-1 tie at Portland last Friday and suffering a 3-0 loss at Washington last Sunday. DePaul, which will open BIG EAST action on Friday at Cincinnati, enters the weekend at 4-3-1 overall following a pair of losses to Iowa State and Minnesota last weekend in Minneapolis.
Friday's match will be the 12th all-time between the Cardinals and Irish with Notre Dame holding an 8-3-0 advantage in the series. Last season, Louisville earned a pair of wins over Notre Dame taking a 1-0 victory in South Bend to open league play and pulling out a 2-1 triumph in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship in Morgantown, W.Va. Sunday's game will be the 17th all-time between the Cards and Blue Demons with U of L holding a slim 8-7-1 edge. Last season, the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Louisville.
CARDINALS OPEN BIG EAST SLATE AT NOTRE DAME AGAIN
For the second straight season, Louisville will open its BIG EAST Conference schedule at Notre Dame. Last season, the Cardinals earned a 1-0 win over the Irish in South Bend to begin their run to the program's first ever BIG EAST National Division title. Overall, Louisville is 6-1 in BIG EAST openers since joining the league, including wins in each of the last two seasons. The Cardinals have opened league action in the BIG EAST with back-to-back wins twice -- in 2010 and in their first ever season in the conference in 2005.
LOUISVILLE IN THE NCAA STATISTICS
After the completion of four weeks of the regular season, the first set of NCAA stats rankings were released this week and Louisville is represented among the top 30 nationally in multiple categories. As a team, the Cardinals are ranked 23rd nationally in scoring offense at 2.67 goals per game. Louisville has scored three or more goals in four of its six matches entering the week. Individually, Angelika Uremovich is ranked sixth in the nation with her 1.0 goals-per-game average. She also ranks 18th in total goals with six and 21st in points per game at 2.17. Charlyn Corral ranks 22nd in assists per game at 0.67 and 28th in total assists with four. Erin Yenney ranks 30th this week in game-winning goals with two in the Cardinals' five wins.
CARDINALS FALL FROM NATIONAL RANKINGS FOLLOWING FIRST LOSS
After suffering their first loss of the season last Friday night to visiting Kentucky, Louisville dropped out of the national rankings for the first time in 2012. Prior to split two games last weekend, the Cardinals were ranked 12th in the Soccer America Top 25 and 25th in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25. U of L opened the season ranked 22nd in the Soccer America preseason poll and had risen each week prior to the loss.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following this weekend's road matches, the Cardinals will return home to host Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 21 (7 p.m., ET) and St. John's on Sunday, Sept. 23 (1 p.m.).
