LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After a dramatic comeback win in last week's home-opener, the 14th-ranked Louisville women's soccer team returns to action this weekend for the UK Tropical Smoothie Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
The unbeaten Cardinals will open the event on Friday at 5 p.m., ET against Southeast Missouri before concluding the weekend against UNC-Greensboro on Sunday at noon. Live scoring of the matches will be available through the Gametracker link on the women's soccer schedule page at UofLsports.com.
The Cardinals enter the weekend at 2-0-0 overall following the 4-3 double overtime win against Purdue last Friday night at Cardinal Park. Junior Katie Walz connected for her first goal of the season and just the second of her career to lift Louisville. Junior Angelika Uremovich added two goals to increase her season total to three, while sophomore Casey Whitfield added her second goal of the season in the victory.
Southeast Missouri enters the weekend at 1-2-1 overall after splitting a pair of matches last weekend at home. After opening the weekend with a 1-0 loss to UMKC on Friday, the Red Hawks earned a 2-1 victory over Drake on Sunday. UNCG, which will play host Kentucky on Friday night, enters the weekend at 2-1-0 overall after a pair of impressive wins last week. The Spartans started the weekend with a 1-0 road win at Wake Forest before closing with a 7-0 home triumph against UNC-Asheville on Sunday.
Friday's match will be the first ever meeting between Louisville and Southeast Missouri on the women's soccer pitch. Sunday's matchup will be just the second all-time between the Cardinals and UNC-Greensboro with the Spartans holding a 1-0-0 advantage. In the only previous meeting, Louisville lost 10-0 at UNCG on Oct. 1, 1988.
LOUISVILLE MOVES INTO SOCCER AMERICA TOP 15
Following last week's dramatic win over Purdue, the Cardinals moved up four spots to No. 14 in the latest Soccer America Top 25 poll. Louisville, which debuted at No. 22 in the preseason poll and was No. 18 last week, is one of four BIG EAST Conference teams in this week's poll joining Marquette (No. 8), Georgetown (tie-No. 25) and Rutgers (tie-No. 25). The Cardinals are among those receiving votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25.
UREMOVICH NAMED TO BIG EAST HONOR ROLL
Junior midfielder Angelika Uremovich was named to the weekly BIG EAST honor roll on Monday after scoring a pair of goals in the Cardinals' 4-3 double overtime win against Purdue last Friday night. Uremovich leads Louisville with three goals this season and has 12 career goals as a Cardinal.
CARDINALS WELCOME RETURN OF EXETER, MELHADO
Louisville coaches and players welcomed back standouts Christine Exeter and Rachel Melhado to campus on Wednesday following their matches with Canada at the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Japan. Exeter scored a goal and added an assist while starting all three matches for Canada, while Melhado started on the backline throughout the event for the national team. Canada was eliminated from the event in group play with Monday's loss to North Korea.
Exeter is the reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and a 2011 NSCAA All-America selection, while Melhado started all 24 games on the Cards' backline in 2011 and was a key contributor in the team's nine shutout wins last season.
