LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Here is this week's Louisville baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the Cardinals' 20 players competing this summer.
Infielder Alex Chittenden and right-handed pitcher Jeff Thompson each played for the New England League All-Stars in Monday's 3-2 win over the USA Collegiate National Team at Fenway Park in Boston. The Cardinals have 19 returning underclassman and one incoming signee playing summer baseball in wooden bat leagues around the nation in 2011. Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August to continue Louisville's preparation for the 2012 college baseball season.
New England League
- IF Alex Chittenden (Keene Swamp Bats) finished 0-for-1 with a walk and numerous strong defensive plays at shortstop for the New England League All-Stars in their 3-2 win over the USA National Team on Monday at Fenway Park. Most recently, Chittenden was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in a 10-2 Keene win over the Laconia Muskrats on Tuesday. Overall, he is hitting .366 with nine runs scored, four RBI and six walks in 11 games.
- RHP Jeff Thompson (Keene Swamp Bats) pitched 1.0 inning allowing one unearned run on no hits with one strikeout and one pickoff in the win over Team USA for the New England League All-Stars on Monday at Fenway Park. Overall this summer, he is 1-1 in three starts for Keene with a 2.08 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 13.0 innings pitched.
- In his only outing in the last week, LHP Cody Ege (Vermont Mountaineers) pitched 4.0 shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts against the New Bedford Bay Sox on June 26. Overall, he is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA with eight strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched. He has four total appearances on the mound, including two starts.
Coastal Plain League
- During the last week, OF Adam Engel (Florence RedWolves) hit safely in three of five games with two of those being two-hit performances. Overall, he is hitting .302 with one home run, 21 RBI, 20 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts in his 24 games this summer.
- RHP Travis Tingle (Thomasville HiToms) is 4-0 with four saves in 10 relief appearances this summer. He has 13 strikeouts in 16.0 innings of work and an ERA of 2.81.
- OF Cole Sturgeon made his summer debut for Thomasville on June 20 and he has hit safely in five of his seven games thus far. Overall, he is hitting .273 with three runs scored, two doubles and one RBI.
Cape Cod League
- RHP Justin Amlung (Wareham Gatemen) has three starts so far this summer. He is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched.
- RHP Chad Green has four appearances on the mound this summer for the Bourne Braves, including one start. Overall, he is 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 9.0 innings of work.
- RHP Dace Kime (Chatham Anglers) has six appearances on the mound with three starts. He is 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched.
- RHP Matt Koch has six relief appearances for the Chatham Anglers this summer. He is 1-0 with a 3.24 ERA and seven strikeouts in 8.1 innings of work.
Cal Ripken League
- RHP Brandon Alphin (Baltimore Redbirds) is 3-0 with a 3.57 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched this summer. He has five appearances on the mound with three starts. In his last two outings, he has pitched 9.1 shutout innings while scattering eight hits with four strikeouts.
- RHP Curtis McCombs (Baltimore Redbirds) earned his first win of the summer on June 26 after allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work in the starting role against the Herndon Braves. Overall, he is 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched and five appearances.
