JJ's Juice Takes Game One of 2011 Pizza Bowl

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior right-hander Justin Amlung pitched five strong innings while sophomores Jeff Gardner and Ty Young led the offense as JJ's Juice earned an 8-1 win over Swiss Cheese's in game one of the Louisville baseball team's 2011 Pizza Bowl series on Thursday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Amlung (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier HS), a 2011 First Team All-BIG EAST selection, allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings to get the win for the Juice. After sophomore Curtis McCombs (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) and sophomore lefty Cole Sturgeon (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) followed Amlung with scoreless outings out of the bullpen, junior righty Matt Koch (Cherokee, Iowa/Washington HS) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Gardner (Louisville, Ky./Whitefield Academy) was 2-for-2 with three walks, two RBI and a run scored, while Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs in the victory. Sturgeon had two hits and two runs, while sophomore shortstop Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) added two hits and a run scored for the Juice.
For the Swiss, sophomore righty Jeff Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central HS) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. Offensively, senior outfielder Stewart Ijames (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) had a hit and an RBI in defeat.
The series, which completes the Cardinals' fall workouts, will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m., ET as freshman right-hander Jared Ruxer (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) will lead JJ's Juice against freshman lefty Adam Schemenauer (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South HS). The series will conclude on Sunday at noon with senior righty Travis Tingle (Louisville, Ky./Butler HS) starting for JJ's Juice and sophomore right-hander Chad Green (Effingham, Ill./Effingham HS) going for Swiss Cheese's.
Batting practice will begin approximately one hour prior to first pitch each day. Each game is scheduled for nine innings and admission is free for every game of the series.
