LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer program has released its 2009 schedule, which includes five games against teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament, five BIG EAST home games and an exhibition home match against the Republic of Ireland National Team.
Overall, the Cardinals' 2009 schedule features nine regular season home games and one exhibition home game, as well as the two-day Cardinal Classic on Sept. 4-6 with South Carolina, Saint Louis and Cincinnati. Louisville will open its 2009 season with an exhibition game against Ireland on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. ET, at Cardinal Park.
"We are looking forward to another strong schedule for the 2009 season," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Having the chance to open our season against the Irish National team will be a great experience for our players and a tremendous opportunity for the community to support Cardinal Soccer as well as see an international team play live.
"Our non-conference schedule features strong opponents from major conferences across the country, and one of the highlights of the non-conference schedule will be our home tournament on September 4 and 6, where we will take on the University of South Carolina and St. Louis University. Those games will help prepare us for the tough BIG EAST regular season where we find ourselves on the road for the early part of the season, but are fortunate to finish with four straight home games in October. Once again, we feel like our schedule will certainly help prepare us for post-season play in both the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournament."
Among the teams on the Cardinals' 2009 slate that advanced to the NCAA Tournament is national runner-up Notre Dame, which Louisville will play on Sept. 27 in South Bend, Ind. U of L will host South Carolina, which lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, on Sept. 4 in the Cardinal Classic, while the Cards will play at Texas, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA tourney, on Sept. 11 in Austin. On Oct. 18, Louisville will host 2008 NCAA participant Marquette at Cardinal Park, and the Cards will close the regular season on Oct. 25 at Cardinal Park against Rutgers, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
After closing their exhibition schedule on Aug. 15 at Dayton, the Cardinals officially open the 2009 season against Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. ET at Cardinal Park. Louisville's first road game will be a showdown with rival Kentucky on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m., in Lexington.
U of L will welcome in September by hosting the Cardinal Classic, which will begin on Sept. 4 with Cincinnati against Saint Louis at 5 p.m., and will be followed by the Cardinals and South Carolina at 7 p.m. The Cardinal Classic will conclude on Sunday with the Gamecocks and Bearcats at 11 a.m., followed by the Cardinals and Saint Louis at 1 p.m.
Louisville will then take to the road on back-to-back weekends with games at Texas (Sept. 11), at Baylor (Sept. 13), at Cincinnati for the BIG EAST opener (Sept. 18) and at Butler (Sept. 20). The Cardinals will return home for a BIG EAST game with DePaul on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m., before closing the month at Notre Dame on Sept. 27.
The month of October will begin with another four-game road stretch for the Cardinals at St. John's (Oct. 2), at Syracuse (Oct. 4), at Georgetown (Oct. 9) and at Villanova (Oct. 11). Louisville will follow that with four straight home games to close the regular season, including USF on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., Marquette on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m., Seton Hall on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., and Rutgers on Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
The 2009 BIG EAST Championship will begin with first round games (Oct. 29) and quarterfinal games (Nov. 1) at campus sites, while the semifinals and final are set for Nov. 6-8 at Storrs, Conn. The 2009 NCAA Championship will begin on Nov. 13, with the national champion set to be crowned on Dec. 6.
