The University of Louisville men's swim team completed its first day of competition at the 2009 Men's NCAA National Championships hosted by Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
The Cardinals, who sent a record seven swimmers to the meet, competed in four events today. The 200-free relay team of Brendon Andrews, Adam Madarassy, Carlos Van Isschot and Alex Sweet finished 17th, in 1:18.64, just three one-hundreths of a second short of qualifying for the consols.
The same fate befell the 400-medley relay team of Carlos Van Isschot, Vali Preda, Adam Madarassy and Brendon Andrews, who finished 17th with a time of 3:12.37, just .14 short of the finals.
In individual events, freshman Carlos Almeida finished in 1:48.64 in the 200-Individual Medley. In the 50-free, Brendon Andrews posted a time of 20.34 and Alex Sweet posted a time of 20.41 but fell short of finalling in the event.
"It was not quite the morning we prepared for but this is a fast meet," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "We are a team of fighters and we will be back tomorrow morning ready to battle."
