FORT THOMAS, Ky. - When people are asked to describe what makes University of Louisville women's soccer freshman-to-be Caitlin Beck a success, they are nearly unanimous in their response.
For instance, ask Nina Kearns, who tutored Beck as the head coach at Highlands High School, winning back-to-back state titles with the Bluebirds.
"Caitlin's work ethic and drive to win are what make her a star on the soccer field and the classroom."
"She works just as hard, if not harder in practice as she does in a game. She plays with the same focus, intensity and determination if we are winning 5-0 as if the score was 0-0."
Selected to the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Girls High School All-America Team, Beck earned NKY Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and a senior and was a three-time First Team All-State Selection.
She is also accomplished when it comes to understanding what can continue to make her successful.
"I think my competitive nature will help me be successful at U of L because in the past, this quality has always driven be to better at everything I do, whether it be academics or sports."
"No matter what happens down the road, I am sure that my competitiveness and my hard working attitude will allow me to reach my full potential and be very successful in college and in life."
Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes sees the same qualities in Beck.
"She has a fearsome determination that you rarely find in a player. Caitlin pushes herself to perform at her highest level every day both on and off the field, and we are tremendously excited to have a player with her character as a part of the Louisville Soccer Program."
A three-time NSCAA All-Region Team member and twice the KY East Player of the Year, Beck helped set a state record with 20 shutouts her sophomore and junior seasons. She also scored eight goals as a senior.
A four-time Club State champion while playing for the Cincinnati Classics Hammer, she was named the Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Soccer Sportswoman of the Year her sophomore season. An academic all-star and member of the National Honor Society, Beck also earned four letters in track and field as a middle distance runner.
Pursued by a number of top-flight programs like Iowa, Indiana, Cincinnati, and Xavier, Beck's decision boiled down to what fit.
"I chose the University of Louisville because everything about the school just seemed to fit me."
"The campus is the perfect size and it is close enough to home that my family can come to games, which is very important to me. Also, both the team and the coaching staff have been extremely friendly and helpful to me throughout the entire process. And I have to say that the dorms aren't half bad either!"
Beck hopes to major in exercise science at UofL and would like to be a physical therapist or nutritionist. Her parents are her biggest influence on her athletic career.
She enjoys art, running and spending time with friends and family in her spare time, and if she could have any three guest at the dinner table with her it would be Ellen DeGeneres, Harry Potter and Jesus.
There are a number of things that Beck is looking forward to at UofL, not the least of which is becoming a member of The Ville.
"I think I'm most looking forward to being part of the team. I know I'll grow extremely close to all the girls in the upcoming years and I'm just excited to be a part of the Cardinal family. Playing college soccer will probably be one of the most memorable, rewarding experiences of my life."
You can bet, based on her approach to everything that she does, that Beck will not be robbed of the experience.
