LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team couldn't produce enough offense to capitalize on 6.2 shutout innings by freshman starter Bob Revesz, falling to Villanova 3-1 Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Cardinals won the weekend series, taking the first two games on Saturday and Sunday.
Freshman Stewart Ijames lead off the bottom of the second by hammering a 1-0 pitch to left center for his third home run of the season - all in BIG EAST play, to put the Cardinals (23-15, 8-7 BIG EAST) on top 1-0.
Revesz, who equalled a career high with seven strikeouts, worked 1-2-3 innings in the third and sixth, scattering six hits and a walk.
The 1-0 held up until the top of the eighth. Wildcat (18-20, 5-10 BIG EAST) shortstop Derek Shunk doubled off the wall in left center and Dan Terpack singled, putting runners at the corners with one out. UofL closer B.J. Rosenberg struck out James Dolbier on three pitches, but Wesley Borden and Kyle Carver hit consecutive RBI singles to turn the Cardinal lead into a 2-1 deficit.
An RBI triple by Ryan Arcadia in the top of the ninth made it 3-1.
The Cardinals threatened, putting two on with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but could not push across the equalizer.
Rosenberg (4-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk in 1.2 innings, striking out three. Gabriel Shaw gave up a run on a hit in two-thirds of an inning, getting the final out of the seventh on one pitch before facing the first two batters of the eighth.
VU starter Brian Streilein (3-3) picked up the win, surrendering a run on five hits and four walks in 7.1 frames, fanning five. Ryan Shockley gave up one hit in an inning of relief and Josh Eidell picked up his sixth save of the season, giving up a hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Ijames had three of the Cardinals' seven hits.
