LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team closed out the spring season scoring a pair of second half goals to earn a tie against instate rival Kentucky at Cardinal Park.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a header off of a set piece.
The Cardinals took the deficit into intermission to regroup, but the Cats notched a second goal early in the second half for a 2-0 lead.
With ten minutes remaining in the match, Lindsay Boling cut the lead to one when Kelsey Hunyadi played a long free kick into the box.
An attempted clear by the UK defense was controlled by Boling at the top of the 18 and she played the ball from her chest to her feet and sent a volley over the head of the Kentucky keeper, making it 2-1.
Sparking the attack, the Cardinals netted the equalizer minutes later.
Hunyadi controlled a corner and fired a shot toward the right corner that deflected off of a Cats defender that was guarding the goal line. The rebound eventually ended up on the feet of Caitlin Rehder who directed a shot through traffic in front for a 2-2 score.
The Cards battled to complete the rally, but time expired before they could collect the game winner.
The previous week saw the Cardinals defeat a solid Dayton squad in Louisville.
The Cards were the aggressor against the Flyers, as goalkeeper Katie Kuric sent a long punt that fell in behind the Dayton back line to an onrushing Boling.
She worked in on the Dayton keeper, and her first shot was stopped, but Boling collected the carom and buried the follow-up for a 1-0 Louisville advantage.
Having surrendered a lead to Miami in the previous match, the Cards this time were able to hold off the Flyer attack and protect the 1-0 lead.
Late in the match, Cardinal defender Katie Owen went into a challenge and ended up tearing her ACL, ending what had been a tremendous performance both on the day and on the year. She hopes to return this fall.
The Cardinals will be striving for a third consecutive trip to the NCAA's when the season opens in an exhibition match on August 13 at Northwestern.
