SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Freshman Giselle Mangal had a goal and an assist, while Caley Egan and Shannon Leamy each netted their first career goals as the University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Seton Hall 3-1 Sunday.
"We produced a number of good scoring chances against a tough Seton Hall team and we did well to capitalize on those chances," Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said.
"We were a bit disappointed to give a goal away at the end of the game, but all in all it was a good performance from the team and an important win on the road."
The teams battled back and forth in the early going, and on the second corner kick of the first half for the Cards, Louisville (5-5-3, 3-2-2 BIG EAST) established possession in the attacking third, which lead to the first goal of the game.
Mangal broke down the right sideline and cracked a shot that ricocheted off of the crossbar, but an opportunistic Leamy headed it into the net for her first career goal at 32:49.
Seton Hall (5-7-2, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) pressured the Cards in the waning minutes of the half and nearly tied the game in the 39th minute when Cassie Gioia's header hit the post.
Despite trailing 1-0 at the break, Seton Hall outshot the Cards 7-2, but none of the Pirate's shots were on goal.
The Cardinals opened the second half by putting immediate pressure on the Pirates. A Linsday Boling shot sailed high, Katie Owen sent a shot wide and Mangal's bid for a goal was turned away by SHU keeper Elizabeth Bond in the first seven minutes.
Bond stopped Caitlin Rehder's header in the 60th minute, but the pressure lead to a corner kick, and Mangal deftly curled the ensuing corner inside the back post for her third goal of the season and a 2-0 Cardinal lead.
The Pirates countered by subbing in some fresh legs, but UofL continued to pressure the Pirates with three more shots in the next nine minutes.
At the 73:05 mark Jessica Mello played a ball into Egan, who turned past a defender and struck a ball from 20 yards out that found the net low, near post for a 3-0 advantage.
UofL outshot SHU 11-4 in the second half, and 13-11 for the game. The only shot on goal for the Pirates was with 48 seconds remaining off the foot of Nicki Gross, which resulted in her fourth goal of the season and the 3-1 final margin.
Leamy, Egan and Mangal all came off the bench for the Cards and combined for seven of the teams' shots, with four of those on goal, including all three goals.
Mello, a senior co-captain, picked up her second assist of the season and Mangal her first. Ten different Cards have scored goals this season and 12 different players have points.
The four-game BIG EAST road trip continues with a match at Marquette Friday at 7:00 p.m. and in Tampa against USF at noon on Sunday.
