
Swimming and Diving Sweep Western Kentucky in Home Meet Finale

The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team swept visiting Western Kentucky for first time in school history to send the Cardinal seniors out in style in their final home meet. The men prevailed 184-116, handing the undefeated Hilltoppers their first loss. The women won 176-124.
"This team showed all the earmarks of a team coming together," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "We got all kinds of points from new faces and that makes it a very good win. It was a great way to send our seniors off. This has been such as special class because they shared the vision and we are grateful for their contribution."
Leslie Van Winkle set three pool records and won three races to lead the Cardinal women. The men were led by Sergiu Daghid's wins in both the 100- and 200-breast. Nicole Landisch had a pair of firsts in the 50-free and the 100-fly. Senior Robbie Lewis was perfect in his last performance in the Ralph Wright Natatorium with a sweep of both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
"We are not done yet, our season is all focused on the BIG EAST Conference Championships coming up in February. We have a lot of detail work left to put together before we head out to New York. I am so pleased with this season, it is the most fun I have had coaching in long time."
To start the meet, the women's 200 medley relay team of Whitney Campbell, Johanna Nyysti, Nicole Landisch and Liz Halet won with a time of 1:44.92. The men broke the pool record and swept the top two spots in the event. The team of Carlos Van Isschot, Vali Preda, Adam Madarassy and Andrei Radzionau finished first at 1:30.67 for the new pool mark. Second was the foursome of Andrei Teudean, Sergiu Daghid, Rafal Kuchta and Jordan Wessels who touched at 1:32.48.
In the 1000-free, Amanda Henleben took top honors with a time of 10:22.65. Western's Krista Mantay was second at 10:27.52. Another pool record fell, this one almost nine seconds faster than the previous mark of 9:25.35 when Western's Sean Penhale won at 9:14.97. The Cardinals' Shane Lichtenberg was second at 9:28.46 with teammate Anthony Mason touching fourth at 9:48.19.
In the women's 200-free, U of L's Leslie Van Winkle led the whole way for the win at 1:48.33 breaking another pool mark of 1:49.14. WKU's Claire Alexandre was second at 1:52.70. Liz Halet was third with a time of 1:55.04 for the Cards. Andre Radzionau and Chris Lindauer made it a men's Cardinal sweep with times of 1:40.61 and 1:41.27 respectively. Topper Greg Gerum was third at 1:41.68 as the top Hilltopper.
In the women's 100-back, Jessica Aspinall and Stephanie Terrell made it a one-two sweep for the `Toppers. Whitney Campbell was the top Cardinal finisher at third in a 58.75. Carlos Van Isschot was first with a 50.25. Andre Teudean was third in 51.18 for the Cardinals. Francis Gilmore turned in a second place finish in 50.96.
The 100-breast was won by the Cardinals when Sergiu Daghid powered to a first with a time of 56.48, edging teammate Vali Preda, who was second at 56.91. For the women, U of L newcomer Therese Bergstrom was first in 1:04.63 just out-touching fellow Cardinal Johanna Nyysti at 1:04.87.
In the 200-fly, Donahue was first at 2:03.92, Jenny Schimenti was second in 2:08.32. Abby Miller was fifth to add a point for the Cardinals. For the men, another pool record fell when Rafal Kuchta posted a win in1:47.02 breaking the pool mark of 1:47.87. Adam Madarassy was second at 1:49.56.
In the 50-free, Nicole Landisch posted a 23.48 and broke her own pool record of 23.62 for first. WKU's top racer was Claire Alexandre at second in 24.13. For the men, Andrei Radzionau and Chris Lindauer made the 50-free a one-two sweep with times of 20.96 and 21.13. In an exhibition heat, U of L's Ian Trapp and Gavin Mittel posted BIG EAST qualifying times. Kevin Cargill was the top WKU swimmer at third in 21.70.
For the 100-free, the Cards swept the top three spots, with Whitney Campbell touching first at 51.26, Dishuck at 51.84 and Liz Halet at 52.18. Jennifer Adams was the top WKU swimmer. For the men, Andrei Radzionau was first in 45.60, Carlos Van Isschot was third at 47.31. WKU's Gerum was second in 47.25 to break up the sweep.
The 200-back pool record was another victim as Leslie Van Winkle trimmed it to 2:00.01 from 2:02.07. Western's Jessica Aspinall was second in 2:03.98. Nicole Cindric was third in 2:07.32. For the men in the same event, Andrei Teudean (1:50.48) was just outtouched by Francis Gilmore (1:50.24) in a hotly contested finish.
In the women's 200-breast, U of L newcomer Therese Bergstrom was first 2:21.89 and senior Johanna Nyysti was third in 2:23.30. For the men, Sergiu Dahghid won handily at 2:05.58 and Wes Brown was second in 2:06.27with Vali Preda finishing third in 2:06.91.
In the men's 1-meter diving, senior Robbie Lewis won easily with a score of 298.34. Scott Sargent (249.67) and David Zamkov 241.58) made it a three-place sweep. Peyton Thomas was the top Western diver with a score of 239.25. In the men's 3-Meter, Robbie completed his sweep with a score 316.88. David Zamkov was third with 267.15.
In the women's 3-meter diving, Western's Erica Wilson took top honors with a score of 239.33. U of L's McKenzie Long was second with a score of 234.83. In the 1-meter, McKenzie Long won with a score of 260.40, Sarah Sandroni 234.82.
In the women's 500-free, WKU was able to take the top two spots. WKU's Sean Penhale set another pool record at 4:32.25 breaking the mark of 4:34.52. U of L freshman Shane Lichtenberg was second at 4:38.23.
In the 100-fly, Western's Claire Donahue's 55.39 was good for first. U of L's Nicole Landisch's 55.98 took second. In the men's event, Adam Madarassy took the event in 48.56 for the win.
In the 200-IM, Leslie Van Winkle set her third pool record with a winning time of 2:01.84 beating the mark of 2:04.68 and Anna Dishuck was second in 2:08.65 Chelsea Stephens from Western was third in 2:11.12. WKU's Greg Gerum won for the men in 1:52.82. Vali Preda was second in 1:53.28. Luke Wakefield was third with a time of 1:56.04 for the Cards.
In the 400-free relay, the women's A team of put up a score of 3:27.79 A team for the win. The men's race was won by U of L's A team. The Cardinals were powered by Chris Lindauer's outstanding swim in the second leg to post a time of 3:04.84 just three one-hundreths off the pool record.
