LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team, coming of the first NCAA bid in program history, will face 10 teams that competed in the 2006 NCAA Championship over the course of its 20-game slate that includes a pair of exhibition matches to open the 2007 season.
"Our 2007 schedule is extremely challenging and it is exactly what our program is in search of as we continue to build on the success we saw last year," said Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson, the winningest coach in U of L women's soccer history who embarks on her eighth season with the Cards.
"Playing in the Big East always provides you with a very competitive conference schedule and this year we have added terrific ACC, Big Ten and SEC opponents. We look forward to the challenge that our schedule presents to us and know that it will only help us as we strive to consistently be in the top 25 in the country."
Louisville will return to the site of their first NCAA appearance when they open the season in Knoxville, Tennessee on August 21 in an exhibition match against the Volunteers, who advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season.
Nebraska will come to Cardinal Park on August 25 for the fourth annual Jenna Cooper Memorial Match, the final exhibition before the regular season opens at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup against 2006 NCAA participant Loyola (IL) on Friday, August 31 at 5:30 p.m. ET. The Cards will meet fellow NCAA qualifier Purdue for the first time in school history on September 2 at 1:00 p.m.
The home opener will feature Butler on September 9 at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
Louisville will open BIG EAST competition at Cincinnati on September 21 at 5:30 p.m.
Other NCAA teams on the schedule for the Cards include visits to Wake Forest (9/12), West Virginia (10/5) and Villanova (10/26). U of L plays host to Kentucky (9/23), 2006 National runner-up Notre Dame (9/28), Rutgers (10/11) and Marquette (10/19).
The most successful season in University of Louisville women's soccer history concluded with the team ranking 24th in the final NSCAA/adidas poll. The Cards posted a school record 13 wins and a .725 winning percentage, also tops in Cardinal history.
The success for the team did not end on the field as the Cardinals posted a 3.31 team GPA for the Fall 2006 semester.
