
Johnson and Whiting Named All-American

TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior second baseman Logan Johnson and senior outfielder Boomer Whiting have been named Third Team All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball.
They join Mark Jurich, Dan Kopriva and Jim LaFountain in an elite group of Cardinal baseball players that have been selected to an All-American team.
Johnson, a First Team All-BIG EAST selection has hit a school-record and conference best 26 doubles this season, and his 65 career two-baggers is also a U of L standard. The 68 times he has been hit by a pitch in his career places him 6th in NCAA history. He has set a new single season standard having been smoked 26 times this season.
The Owensboro, Kentucky native is second in the BIG EAST in slugging % (.688), runs(64) and HBP (26) and third in home runs (13), total bases (150) and on base % (.500). He is in sixth in average (.372) and fifth in RBI (55). He was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes and Wallace Awards, both awarded to the top college baseball player in the nation.
Johnson ranks tied for fifth in Cardinal history in games played (214), 10th in runs (166), 7th in walks (110), tied for ninth in RBI (157) and is tied for 8th in single season runs(64).
Whiting was also First Team All-BIG EAST and is the most prolific base stealer in Cardinal history more than doubling the single season record for steals (30), leading the nation with 69 in 80 attempts. His 107 steals in 125 attempts during his career is the top total in Cardinal history. Earlier this season, he posted a career-best 19-game hit streak, the fourth-longest in U of L history.
His 28 steals in BIG EAST games set a new conference record. In an 18-game stretch he stole 19 straight bases without getting caught. In the BIG EAST quarterfinal win over Rutgers he stole four bases, tying the single game mark at U of L and setting a new BIG EAST standard. Whiting was also a semifinalist for the Wallace Award.
Whiting hit .358 with 64 runs (second in the BIG EAST) and 22 RBI as the leadoff-man. He ranks third in career games played (216), 6th in at bats (770), tied for 10th in hits (234), 6th in runs (182), second in HBP (42) and is also tied for 8th in single season runs(64) in addition to the stolen base crowns.
The Cardinals, who set a school record with 40 wins (40-20) under first-year Head Coach Dan McDonnell, will travel to Columbia, Missouri where they are the #3 seed in the NCAA Columbia Regional, facing #2 seed Miami (Fla.) Friday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
