CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati scored four unanswered runs to defeat the University of Louisville 4-2 Friday night and even the weekend series at one game apiece. The rubber game will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Marge Schott Stadium.
"Cincinnati had a lot to play for tonight and it showed in their effort," said Head Coach Dan McDonnell.
"What was disappointing is that we were still playing for a shot at the BIG EAST title and we didn't put forth our best effort. Hopefully we will bounce back tomorrow and give our team some positive momentum as we head into the BIG EAST Championship in Brooklyn."
Louisville will be the #3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship and according to the championship bracket, will play either USF, Villanova or Notre Dame in a first round game on Tuesday, May 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Keyspan Park in Brooklyn, New York.
Logan Johnson belted his team-leading 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot to right in the top of the third that put the Cards (37-18, 18-8 BIG EAST) on top 2-0. Derrick Alfonso had singled up the middle ahead of the blast.
Cincinnati's (28-27, 10-15 BIG EAST) Cameron Satterwhite hit his ninth home run of the season on a 2-0 pitch in the bottom of the third to cut the lead in half.
With two out in the top of the fifth, Johnson stepped to the plate, and after the first pitch sailed to the backstop from UC starter Dan Osterbrock, the 1-2 pitch hit Johnson and Osterbrock was ejected from the game.
After a prolonged delay, Nick Buscemi came in from the bullpen and retired the next eight batters he faced. Osterbrock gave up two runs on three hits, striking out three in his 4.2 innings of work.
An RBI single to center by Ryan Baker tied the game at two and a sac fly by Satterwhite put the Bearcats on top 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. An infield single by Kyle Rapp scored Josh Harrison from second in the sixth, extending the advantage to 4-2.
Buscemi (1-3) picked up his first win of the season, allowing just two hits over the final 4.1 innings while striking out four.
Cardinal starter Justin Marks (6-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out five.
Kyle Hollander struck out three over the final two innings for the Cards.
Johnson doubled in the eighth, his 25th of the season, establishing a new single season standard in Cardinal baseball history. He was also plunked twice, making it 65 times that he has been hit in his career, tying him for 6th in NCAA history.
Chris Cates laid down his 50th career sac bunt, good for sole possession of third in the NCAA career list. Boomer Whiting's 40th career sacrifice places him eighth.
